WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Saint Leo women's soccer went on the road to open Sunshine State Conference play and came away with three points following a 3-2 win over Palm Beach Atlantic at PBA Soccer/Lacrosse Field Saturday evening.
The win snapped the Lions' (4-3-1, 1-0-0 SSC) losing skid of two games where the Lions saw three players score a goal on the night. As a team, the Lions used just nine shots, five on frame, to score three goals where the Green and Gold edged the Sailfish (4-2-0, 1-1-0 SSC) in saves 5-2. Saint Leo committed 19 fouls to PBA's 11 while both teams were tied in corner kicks at four apiece.
After a tied opening 45-minutes, the Lions'
Kennedy Messina scored the first goal in the 51' before
Carolina Solis-Deleon put the Green and Gold up in the 65'. Kylee Rullo pulled the Sailfish within one with a goal in the 68'.
Jelani Ashley found the back of the net in the 77' to give the Green and Gold a two-goal cushion again. Rullo once again found the net to make the game 3-2. Palm Beach Atlantic would fire five shots down the stretch where three were off target and two found the hands of Lions' keeper,
Julia Ortiz.
Ortiz played all 90 minutes in frame with five saves allowing just two goals despite the 19 shots, seven which were on frame.
Saint Leo returns to action on Oct. 2 in St. Petersburg, Fla. as the Green and Gold look to take on Eckerd (4-1-1, 0-1-1 SSC) at Johnson Field.
