Lions Ledger: Men's soccer opens up SSC play at home

  • Saint Leo cross country returns to the course after running at the UF Mountain Dew Invitational on Sept. 14. The men's team finished fourth while the women took 10th out of the 30+ teams.
  • Shane Bracken paced the men's team at the Mountain Dew Invitational, taking second overall out of 310 runners, trailing just one Division I runner out of North Florida. For his efforts and performance, Bracken earned SSC Runner of the Week on Sept. 16.
  • Paige Patterson led the women's squad with a 22nd place finish where she was followed up by Ashley Lindeman in 34th place.
  • At last year's Holloway Park Preseason Festival, in Lakeland, the men's team took home first place and the women's team took third. Saint Leo alumnae Laura Tobin won the women's race by 11-seconds with a time of 19:47.9.
  • The Green and Gold women will be lined up against nine other colleges or universities with a running club and training group while the men face off against nine other colleges or universities and two running clubs.

  • Saint Leo puts its perfect 2-0 Sunshine State Conference record on the line this weekend on the road at Palm Beach Atlantic and nationally-ranked Barry.
  • The Lions opened conference play last weekend with a 3-0 sweep of Florida Southern at home before taking down 13th-ranked Tampa on the road 3-1.
  • The Lions have won three-straight against the Sailfish including a 3-1 victory at home last season and a 3-0 sweep on the road. The Lions' 3-2 victory in West Palm Beach in 2017 over the then-No. 3 ranked Sailfish snapped an eight-match losing streak for the Lions in the series.
  • Saint Leo and Barry have split the last 10 meetings 5-5 but the Lions have won three of the last five meetings. The Buccaneers snapped the Lions' three-match win streak in the series last season as they swept the Lions.
  • Senior Anilise Fitzi has taken over the top spot on the 2019 squad in kills per set for the Lions at 2.87 while junior Ashley Quero is just behind her at 2.84. Fitzi has also led the defensive effort at the net with 1.08 blocks per set.
  • Redshirt junior Anna Garrett is the reigning Sunshine State Conference Setter of the Week and has been averaging 10.22 assists while controlling the Saint Leo offense.
  • Palm Beach Atlantic enters the weekend with a 6-4 record including 1-1 in SSC play. The Sailfish were ranked among the top-25 up until the most recent rankings and all four of their losses came to teams either ranked in the top-25 or receiving votes. Sam Wolf has been leading the way offensively with 3.42 kills per set. Amber Rowoldt has also been averaging over 3.0 kills per set at 3.08 as well. Defensively, Jennie Anderson leads the way with 29 total blocks.
  • Barry enters the weekend ranked tied for 25th in the AVCA Coaches Poll and carries a 6-4 overall record and is 1-1 in SSC play. Similar to PBA all four of Barry's losses have come from teams ranked in the top-25 or receiving votes. Megi Buvinic has been pacing the Buccaneer offense with 3.11 kills per set while Anastasiia Samokhvalova leads defensively at 1.22 blocks per set.
  • Saint Leo dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 8 Flagler on Wednesday at the Saint Leo Soccer Field. The Lions enter play in the Sunshine State Conference with a 3-3-1 overall record.
  • Rebecca Anderson, a senior defender, continues to lead the Lions' scoring with a pair of goals and an assist. She is supported by Sydney Chase with two goals on the season.
  • In the net, Julia Ortiz has earned all seven starts where she has earned 30 saves.
  • Palm Beach Atlantic tallied their third-straight victory on Saturday in PBA's 1-0 SSC opener against Florida Southern.
  • On the season, Karina Williams has earned two goals and two assists followed by Michaela Boyd with three goals.
  • In the net, Madison Chiola has earned five starts where she has earned 16 saves.
  • Last meeting on September 19, 2018, Saint Leo edged PBA 2-1 at the Saint Leo Soccer Field.
  • Saint Leo remains undefeated at home after defeated Montevallo 3-1 in a late offensive burst Wednesday night.
  • The Lions rallied for a pair of goals in the last three minutes of the game to clinch the non-conference contest. Elias Niesigk led the charge against the Falcons with a goal and assist. Federico Toschi claimed the game-winner in the 87th minute. Dylan Moriera put the icing on the cake with seconds left in regulation.
  • On the season, Toschi leads the offense with three goals. Niesigk follows with five points from a goal and three assists.
  • In the net, Wessel Berenschot has earned five starts followed by Christian Evans with two. Berenschot has earned 18 saves while Evans has racked up 12.
  • No. 14 Palm Beach Atlantic is coming off a 3-1 win over Flagler on Wednesday. The Sailfish scored three-straight before giving up a goal in the 63rd minute.
  • On the season, Claudio Rivadeneira leads PBA's scoring with four goals followed by Giancarlo Triulizi with three.
  • In the net, Elliott Barker has earned five starts with 15 saves.
  • Last meeting on September 19, 2018, the then No. 5 Sailfish handed the Lions a 1-0 loss in West Palm Beach, Fla.
