Lions Ledger: Men's Soccer and Volleyball debut at home

  • Saint Leo opens up the home portion of its schedule along with the Sunshine State Conference slate this Friday before hitting the road to take on nationally-ranked Tampa on Saturday.
  • The Lions went 3-1 last weekend at the UIndy Invitational with a 3-2 loss to the host Greyhounds and wins over Davenport, Northern Michigan and Saginaw Valley. The Lions now have just two losses on the season and they both came in five sets.
  • Friday night will kick-off with the Saint Leo Block Party presented by the Saint Leo Student Government Union (SGU) and Campus Activities Board (CAB).   • Dating back to the 2001 season, the Lions are 10-8 in Sunshine State Conference openers but they have won their last two. Their last loss in a SSC opener came on the road at Florida Southern in 2016.
  • Two Lions are climbing their respective career leader boards and have a chance to move up this weekend. Redshirt junior Anna Garrett needs just 15 assists to surpass Sarah Doctor (1997-98) for fourth all-time in career assists with 2,098. Senior Annabella Arcari is just six total blocks away from moving into the top-six in program history with 304, Arcari would move ahead of Kristy Johnson (1996-99) who posted 303 blocks during her four-year career.
  • Junior Ashley Quero has led the Lions' offense with 2.90 kills per set while senior Anilise Fitzi is right on her heels with 2.68 kills per set. Fitzi has also paced the defensive effort with 35 blocks through eight matches.
  • Florida Southern enters the weekend 2-5 on the year with wins over IUP and Lee. The Mocs have faced two nationally-ranked opponents so far this season. Erica Ronda has led the offense with 2.85 kills per set while Tierra Porter has patrolled the net with a team best 26 blocks.
  • Tampa comes in ranked 13th in the AVCA Coaches Poll but the Spartans have lost four-straight all of which happened at the Colorado Premier Classic this past weekend. The Spartans have faced four nationally-ranked programs with a 2-2 record including a 3-2 victory over No. 17 Central Missouri and a 3-1 victory over No. 5 Concordia-St. Paul. Katie McKiel is pacing the offense with 3.50 kills per set while Mackenzie Dufresne has led the defense with 17 total blocks.
  • Saint Leo enters the week with a 2-1-1 overall record after a 1-1 double overtime draw with Montevallo and a 2-1 loss against Christian Brothers.
  • Rebecca Anderson and Rebecca Niblett each tallied a goal for the Lions this week. Anderson now leads the Lions offense from the backline with a pair of goals. Adriana Tirado and Carolina Solis-Deleon join Niblett in having scored a goal this season.
  • In goal, Julia Ortiz has earned four starts facing 65 shots on her way to 20 saves.
  • Spring Hill enters the week with a 1-2 mark going 0-2 this past weekend. SHC faced Newberry (3-0) and Albany State (4-2).
  • Grace Riley and Corinna Soto scored for the Badgers on Sunday against Albany State.
  • Between the pipes, Kira Babiarz has faced 39 shots while earned 15 stops.
  • West Florida has a 2-1 record after dropping a 3-2 decision to Rollins on Friday followed by a 5-0 win over Albany State on Sunday.
  • Annie Rolf leads the Argonauts offense with three goals and an assist. Five others have contributed goals already in the early season start.
  • Esthefanny Barreras has earned three starts where she has earned six saves.
  • Saint Leo went 1-1 last week moving its' overall record to 1-3. The Lions fell 2-1 to No. 3 Lander on Friday followed by a 3-1 win at USC Aiken on Sunday.
  • Mathis Hardy scored at Lander, assisted by Elias Niesigk. Guillaume Campos, assisted by Peter Holt, along with Roberto Biendicho tallied goals for the Lions on Sunday, along with an own goal by the Pacers.
  • In goal, Wessel Berenschot has earned two starts and three appearances. The senior from Apeldoorn, Netherlands has compiled 13 saves while facing 21 shots. Christian Evans has earned one start in the net, earning six saves.
  • Pensacola Christian visits Saint Leo with a 4-2 overall record after going 1-1 last week. The Eagles dropped a 3-2 decision to Belhaven on Thursday followed by a 5-1 win over Mississippi on Saturday.
  • Embry-Riddle holds an 0-2 overall record after traveling to Lee (1-0) and hosting Shorter (3-2).
  • Against Shorter, Tim-Frederik Lange scored both goals for the Eagles.
  • Jack Crichton and Gudmundor Sigurbjornsson have earned a start each in goal.
