Lions Volleyball Posts 2-0 Day at UIndy Invitational

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Saint Leo University volleyball team moved to 6-2 on the season with a perfect day at the UIndy Invitational Saturday. The Lions knocked off Northern Michigan early in the day 3-1 before downing Saginaw Valley State by the same score in the evening.
 
In the opening match of the day senior Victoria Omoregie and junior Ashley Quero led the way with 12 kills apiece against the Wildcats. Quero added a team-high four service aces while Omoregie had three blocks including one solo.
 
The Lions once again put on a block party with 10 team blocks led by senior Anilise Fitzi's six-block performance including a pair of solo stops. Redshirt junior setter Anna Garrett dished out 37 assists while digging up a team-best 18 balls. Sophomore libero Payton Bellano added 14 digs while freshman Skylar Singleton posted 12.
 
The Lions won the opening set 25-21 before dropping set number two 25-22. Saint Leo went on to win the match with 25-23 third set and 25-20 fourth set victories.
 
The nightcap featured the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals who entered the day unbeaten and receiving votes in the AVCA Coaches Poll. The Lions posted 12 blocks in the match while hitting at a .245 clip to earn the victory.
 
Three Lions reached double-figures in kills led by Quero and senior Nina Vattovaz who each posted 16 kills in the match. Quero added 16 digs for a double-double. Fitzi chipped in 10 kills and a team-best seven blocks including one solo stop. Omoregie came up just shy of double-figures with nine kills and five blocks.
 
Garrett handed out 44 assists while digging up 12 balls for her second double-double of the day. Bellano led the way in digs with 19 while also putting down a pair of service aces.
 
Similar to the opening match the Lions won the first, third and fourth sets to claim the victory, 25-20, 22-25, 26-24 and 25-20.   
 
Saint Leo will return to action Friday night inside the Marion Bowman Activities Center as they play their home opener against rival Florida Southern at 7 p.m. Prior to the match will be the Saint Leo Block Party presented by the Saint Leo Campus Activities Board (CAB).
