Nolan Matches Sargent in Series Finale

Redshirt junior tosses complete game two-hit shutout in home finale

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Redshirt junior Ryan Nolan of the Saint Leo baseball team matched the performance set by sophomore McCabe Sargent as he pitched a complete game two-hit shutout versus Florida Southern Friday afternoon to give the series victory to the Lions, 7-0. The performance was the first career complete game for Nolan who moved to 4-3 on the year on the mound.

Nolan went 9.0 innings with just two hits allowed while he struck out six and walked one.

The victory moves Saint Leo's record to 23-24 overall and 12-15 in Sunshine State Conference play while Florida Southern dropped to 22-25 and 8-19 in league play.

All seven Saint Leo RBI came from seven different batters. As everyone was involved up and down the lineup. Senior Peyton Isaacson, senior Brett Coffel and junior Jacob Reimold all finished with two hits in the game. Isaacson was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a walk. Coffel was 2-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored and an RBI while Reimold was 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored and two walks.

The Lions honored eight seniors prior to first pitch as Isaacson, Coffel, Jared Morello, Grant McDaniel, Derek Gibree, Aaron Portee, Shane Haight and Liam "Skip" O'Connor were all recognized before the game.

Portee provided a highlight reel catch in left field as he robbed a game-tying home run in the top of the fourth from Mocs clean-up hitter Jacob Teter. Portee reached over the wall to make the catch and keep the Lion 1-0 lead safe. The bottom half of the inning saw the Lions explode for four runs which was sparked by the great catch in right.

Sophomore Danny Torres had the only other extra base hit as he picked up a triple down the right field line that was deflected by a diving right fielder.

The Lions will close out the 2019 season next weekend as they travel to Embry-Riddle for a final three-game SSC series.
