SAINT LEO, Fla. – Redshirt senior Derek Gibree and sophomore McCabe Sargent of the Saint Leo baseball team earned their first career All-Sunshine State Conference honors Wednesday afternoon. Gibree was tabbed the First Team All-Conference shortstop while Sargent earned Second Team All-Conference starting pitcher.
 
Gibree is the first Saint Leo position player to earn first team honors since Troy Sieber was named first team first baseman in 2016 while Sargent is the first Lion starting pitcher to earn second team honors since 2015 when both Jordan Pendleton and Mike Dunnigan received the honor. Gibree also becomes the first Saint Leo shortstop to take first team accolades since 1992 when Brian Castellano was given the nod.
 
Gibree follows in the footsteps of his father Bob Gibree who was a two-time First Team All-Sunshine State Conference selection in 1983 and 1984 at catcher.
 
Gibree finished his career with 201 career hits including 55 as a redshirt senior. He batted .296 in is final campaign with nine doubles, a home run and 18 RBI. He played in and started 194 career games at Saint Leo including 49 in 2019. He concluded his career with 340 putouts and 543 assists in the field. He was part of the Saint Leo middle infield that helped the Lions rank second in the NCAA with 51 double plays, just two behind leader Emporia State who had 53. Gibree had a trio of three-hit performances on the year including going 3-for-4 against Tiffin with two RBI, a walk and a run scored.
 
Sargent began the year in the bullpen but emerged as the Friday night starter for the Lions midway through the season. He finished the year with a 3.77 ERA, a 4-5 record and 69 strikeouts in 74.0 innings pitched. He hurled a complete game two-hit shutout against Florida Southern late in the season. He had five starts in which he went 7.0 or more innings on the mound including a streak of four-straight late in the year. He posted a career-best 10 strikeouts against Eckerd in late April and had four games in which he struck out seven or more batters.
