SAINT LEO, Fla. – The fourth-seed Saint Leo women's tennis team topped fifth-seed Florida Southern 4-2 on Monday to advance to the NCAA Division II South Regional I Championship.
Saint Leo surrendered the doubles match point to Florida Southern after falling at number one and number three, 7-5 and 6-1, respectively.
Nina Furmaniak and
Madeleine Gauthier swept their match at number two, 6-0, but it was not enough as the Lions dropped the other two matches.
Kristyna Jurkova tallied the first point for the Green and Gold recording a 6-2, 6-2 win in second singles. She was followed by
Marta Vicens Miquel at first singles sweeping Moccasin Selin Devrimici 6-0 in the first set and 7-6 with a 7-4 tiebreaker.
Andrea Ivanovic lifted the Lions 3-1 over the Mocs with a 6-3, 6-4 fourth singles victory. Florida Southern fought back slithering past
Nina Furmaniak in third singles; 6-3, 7-5.
Nastasia Jedrychowski clinched the NCAA South Regional I for Saint Leo in six singles. The freshman from Caen, France won a long first set battle 7-6 in a 9-7 tiebreaker. Jedrychowski cruised to victory in set two tallying a 6-2 to punch the Lions ticket to the championship.
Beyond the Boxscore
- The win marks the second-straight season the Lions have topped the Moccasins in the NCAA South Region Semifinals in Miami Shores, Fla. In 2018, fourth-seed Saint Leo defeated fifth-seed Florida Southern 5-3.
