Lakeland, Fla. – The No. 3 Saint Leo Lions escaped the No. 19 Florida Southern Moccasins on Tuesday. Tied at 3-3,
Marta Vicens Miquel won a three-set battle to clinch a 4-3 victory for the Lions. The win raised the Lions' overall record to 17-4, 7-2 in the Sunshine State Conference.
Marta Vicens Miquel and
Georgia Dobell put away their third doubles opponents 6-3. Saint Leo dropped the first doubles battle. With doubles play tied at 1-1,
Madeleine Gauthier and
Nina Furmaniak finished the job securing a 7-6 (7-2) to hand the Lions the one-point advantage heading into singles play.
Nina Furmaniak was the first to finish up her singles match, handing in a 6-0, 6-2 decision at the three spot.
Nastasia Jedrychowski at sixth singles recorded the Lions' third match point with a 6-2, 6-4 final.
Vicens Miquel clinched the tight conference match in a long 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 matchup with Selin Devrimci.
The Lions return to the Saint Leo Tennis Center on Wednesday, April 17 at 3 p.m. to host the Embry-Riddle Eagles to close out the regular season. Before the match, Saint Leo will honor its senior class of three:
Georgia Dobell,
Madeleine Gauthier and
Andrea Ivanovic.
