CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's swimming held on to its fourth place spot on the final day of the 2019 Sunshine State Conference Championships in Clearwater, Fla. The Lions finished with 423.50 points to finish over 100 points ahead of fifth place Florida Tech (319 pts.). Freshman
Matthew Daniel and graduate student
Yann Corbel finished 13
th and tied for 14
th, respectively, in total points for the overall meet. The rookie finished with 43 points towards the team total while Corbel posted 42 points.
Junior
Henrik Dahrendorff found himself on the podium once again as he took second in the 200 breast with an impressive 2:00.02 swim which captured another NCAA "B" standard for the Beckum, Germany native. The second place finish is the highest finish of Dahrendorff's career who has three third place showings, all coming in the 100 breast.
Daniel and Corbel picked up valuable points in the 1650 free as they finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Daniel touched the wall just 22 one hundredths of a second ahead of Corbel with atime of 15:42.06 while Corbel stopped the clock at 15:42.28. Both times secured NCAA "B" standard marks for the pair. Junior
Matija Rafaj took 13
th in the event as well after touching in 16:13.07.
Four Lions finished among the top-15 in the 100 free led by junior
Luka Vulic. Vulic placed seventh in the "A" final in a NCAA "B" standard time of 45.30. The final three swam in the "B" final where junior
Michael Southward finished second, good for 10
th overall, with a "B" standard time of 45.40. Junior
Christian Cioffi tied for 12
th overall in the race as he and a swimmer from Nova Southeastern both touched the wall in 45.67. The final scorer in the event was sophomore
Fridtjov Mork who took 15
th at 45.79.
The final individual scorer on the night for the Lions was freshman
Hampus Lovinge who too 15
th in the 200 back at 1:53.44.
The final event of the championship was the 400 free relay. The Lions took both fourth and 13
th overall in the race. The "A" relay of Vulic, Cioffi, Mork and Southward combined to post an NCAA provisional time of 2:59.44 to take fourth while the "B" relay of sophomore
Nic Petruska, freshman
Filip Bjorkholm, Lovinge and sophomore
Beau Hutchins took 13
th in 3:10.48.
Nova Southeastern claimed the title with 852.50 points while Tampa finished in second with 819 points. Florida Southern rounded out the top three with 761 points.
The Lions will now await the announcement of the individuals who qualified for the NCAA Championships which will take place March 13-16 in Indianapolis, Ind.
