Brierley's Season-High Falls Short Against Embry-Riddle

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's basketball team suffered an 87-63 loss at the hands of Embry-Riddle on Saturday.
 
Gina Brierley earned a season-high 21 points leading the Saint Leo (10-15, 5-12 SSC) offense. Casey Wortley cashed in a strong game inside the paint scoring 16 points and a team-high seven rebounds.  
 
Embry-Riddle (16-8, 11-6 SSC) soared to the 24-point decision paced by Lauren Ellenberger just shy of a triple-double (12 points, nine assists, and nine rebounds) along with Nicole Tucker with 30 points. Tucker also snagged eight rebounds.
 
 
How It Happened
  • Olivia Lough's good three-pointer tied up the game at 5-5 at 7:15. At 5:58, Wortley's jumper in the paint leveled the game again, 7-7. Embry-Riddle earned a 5-0 run which was matched by Madelin Lang's three-pointer and another Wortley layup to move the game to 12-12 at 2:40. The Eagles gained a four-point lead that was cut to two points by Alex Button's layup for an 18-16 score after one quarter.
  • A 7-0 run by the visitors recorded the first double-figure gap, 28-16. A four-point stretch by the Lions kept the game within ten points but Embry-Riddle pulled away with an 8-0 run, 42-24. Alex Button's good toss from the line handed the SSC opponents a 42-26 score at the half.
  • A 6-0 run over the span of two minutes handed the Eagles a 20-point lead, 48-28. The Green and Gold put together an 8-0 run of their own to be within 12 points, 48-36. Embry-Riddle earned another run, this time in the form of seven points, 57-38 at 3:40. Morgan Ackermann's back-to-back three-pointers earned the first lead over 20 points for the Eagles; 65-44. Asia Royster's layup closed out the third quarter, 65-46.
  • Embry-Riddle's 6-0 run in the fourth recorded the largest lead of the game of 28 points, 79-51. Saint Leo made a layup and three points on the line, 79-56. Saint Leo couldn't make up ground on Embry-Riddle. Lang tallied a pair of free throws for the 87-63 decision.
