SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo and Flagler stood at a 79-79 draw with 22.2 seconds left in overtime during Tuesday's non-conference game in the Marion Bowman Activities Center. Sophomore guard
Alex Button clinched the thriller, sinking a long jumper with four seconds to go. Flagler jolted to their end of the court for one last attempt but saw their shot hit the rim and fall into the hands of freshman guard
Casey O'Shaughnessy as time expired giving the Lions the 81-79 overtime win.
Trailing by two with under 10-seconds to play, Saint Leo raced down the court and found Button who was set up beyond the arc. Button would get fouled on the ensuing three-point attempt and would head to the free throw line for three. She would sink two of the three sending the game to overtime tied at 75-75. Button finished the night with 18 points and six rebounds for the Green and Gold.
"Alex is playing," passionately expressed head coach
Anthony Crocitto.
Saint Leo (4-3) broke Flagler's (2-3) defense with
Alani Gallagher's strong presence in the paint. The junior forward earned a game-high double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Gallagher added two blocks for a season count of 11 (1.6 avg/g) as the Sunshine State Conference block leader. She also inked two assists and two steals to her dominant performance.
"Alani came back from two subpar games to carry us all 45 minutes on the floor," continued Crocitto. "Montia lead us on and off the court." Defensively,
Montia Moon registered a game-high three steals.
Olivia Lough joined Button and Gallagher in double-digit scoring with 10 points while adding four rebounds, a steal, and an assist.
"I love that our rookies also made big shots.
Amanda Ulrich hit a big three in the game and Casey hit a big floater to tie it up at one point."
"Overall, our grit was a lot better than what we saw in that road trip to Atlantic. We are not going to forget that trip. We are scoring the ball but moving forward we have to continue to defend more," concluded Crocitto."
