Saint Leo Runs Away from Puerto Rico - Mayaguez Wednesday

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo men's basketball ran away from Puerto Rico – Mayaguez Wednesday evening inside the Marion Bowman Activities Center, 83-51, to remain undefeated at home in 2019-2020.
 
Saint Leo (4-1) saw three players score in double-figures led by Kyran McClure's 21 points. Gintaras Bartaskas came off the bench and tallied 13 points while Wade Coomer finished with 11 points on the night. Yalen Reed cleaned up the glass with 11 rebounds nine of which were defensive. Puerto Rico - Mayaguez (0-5) was led by Jay Quintana Ortiz who sank 12 points ahead of Kenneth Lopez Perez with 11. 
 
Saint Leo would use a quick start to take the lead early in the contest. The Lions would extend their lead to 11 with 9:11 to play in the first half. After the Tarzans cut the deficit to single-digits, seven points, with 7:53 to play, Saint Leo would continue to control the first half pushing their lead to 23 points with just five-seconds left, 42-19. Puerto Rico – Mayaguez would run down the court and get the three off at the buzzer to end the half down 20, 42-22.
 
The Green and Gold came out of the half and continued to pace the game extending their lead to 30, 58-28, with 13:39 to play on a Wade Coomer step-back three-pointer. The Lions would cruise for the rest of the half going on for an 83-51 victory.
 
The Lions as a team shot 38.6-percent (22-57) from the field including a 36.7-percent mark from beyond the arc (11-30) and an 83.3-percent (28-35) from the free throw line.
 
Saint Leo held Puerto Rico – Mayaguez to 34-percent (18-53) and just 25-percent (7-28) from beyond the arc. The Tarzans converted 72.7-percent from the free throw line, going 8-for-11.
 
The Lions dominated the glass grabbing 46 rebounds, 31 defensive and 15 offensive.
