SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo men's basketball dominated Georgia College 76-52 to open up play at home inside the Marion Bowman Activities Center Saturday afternoon in the second game of the Saint Leo Classic.
Â
Three Lions (2-1) were in double-figures led by
Kyran McClure's 27 points.
Isaiah Hill tallied 15 points while
Yalen Reed notched 11 points, adding 13 rebounds for a double-double.
Â
A slow start by both teams saw Georgia College (1-2) start the scoring at the 17:52 mark following a combined seven missed shots. Saint Leo would regain the lead at 3-2 on a
Kyran McClure jumper and never looked back. The Green and Gold would extend its lead to 9-4 before pushing it to eight, 15-7 with 12:36 to go. The Bobcats would cut the deficit to four points, 17-13, but a quick 12-6 run by the Lions pushed the gap to 10 points, 29-19, before Saint Leo held a 32-27 mark at the break.
"We were a little tight to start the game," head coach
Lance Randall stated. "We were very good defensively throughout, we had a few bad possessions. Georgia College got us on offensive rebounding which hurt us, some of it was technique and some of it was possibly having nerves and guys just not moving to the ball."
Â
A 12-0 start to the second half by the Green and Gold extended the lead to 15 points, 44-27. After a quick timeout, the Lions would hold a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game, including its largest lead of the game of 25 points with 52-ticks left after a layup by
Erik Lahm.
As a team, the Lions shot 41.3-percent from the field (26-63) while going 89.5-percent (17-19) from the free throw line.
Kyran McClure went 11-for-11 from the charity stripe in his 27-point showing. Behind Reed's 13 rebounds,
Wade Coomer ripped down nine rebounds in his first game inside the Bowman Center. Saint Leo scored 36 points in the paint while scoring 23 points off 18 Bobcat turnovers. In the bench battle, Georgia College outscored Saint Leo 31-13.Â
Randall added, "Overall, Kyran and Isaiah were very good on both sides of the ball, and Jared did a great job defensively."
Â
Randall continued, "Yalen got some easy baskets which got us going and did a nice job rebounding. Defensively as a team, we held them to 28% and just wore them out. They had some bad shot choices which opened up offense for us and we got out in transition."
Saint Leo held Georgia College to 28-percent shooting from the floor (18-64) while causing 18 turnovers.Â
Â
In the first game of the Saint Leo Classic Saturday, Flagler defeated Tampa 89-72. The Spartans and Bobcats will faceoff tomorrow at 12 p.m. before the Lions and Saints conclude the Saint Leo Classic at 2:30 p.m. inside the Marion Bowman Activities Center.Â
"Flagler will open the court very well, they have good shooters and a tough minded point guard that does a good job running the show for them," Randall concluded.
