Lions Ledger: Volleyball Honors Its Seniors; Men's Basketball Hosts Saint Leo Classic

  • Saint Leo plays its final two home matches of the season this weekend by hosting Florida Tech and Embry-Riddle. The Lions will celebrate Senior Night versus the Eagles of ERAU.
  • Friday's match will be the Lions' Salute to Service match. All military and first responders will get free admission to the match and will be honored throughout the night.
  • With just three matches left in the regular season, the Lions were recently ranked fifth in the second NCAA South Region Rankings. Lynn led the poll in first followed by Tampa, Barry and Embry-Riddle to round out the top-four. The top-eight will advance to the NCAA Regional Tournament in early December.
  • Saint Leo has won 14-straight matches against the Panthers of Florida Tech. The last loss by the Lions in the series came back on Oct. 5, 2012 in Melbourne, a 3-2 setback, which snapped another double-digit Lions' win streak in the series. The Lions swept the Panthers 3-0 in both meetings last season but Florida Tech took a set off the Lions earlier this season in a 3-1 defeat
  • Embry-Riddle swept the season series a year ago against the Lions. The wins were the second and third over the Lions for the Eagles since they began playing a Sunshine State Conference schedule in 2015. The Eagles edged Saint Leo 3-2 earlier this season in Daytona Beach to capture their fourth win over the Lions in SSC play.
  • Senior Anilise Fitzi continues to lead the Lions in total kills (264) and total blocks (117) but it is junior Ashley Quero who leads the way in kills per set at 2.77 followed by classmate Michelle Cuervo at 2.47 kills per set. Fitzi comes in at third in the kills per set category at 2.44.
  • Senior Anilise Fitzi still leads the squad in total kills this season at 245 but junior Ashley Quero leads in kills per set at 2.79. Fellow junior Michelle Cuervo is second on the team in kills per set at 2.48 just edging out Fitzi who sits at 2.43. Fitzi has been dominant at the net with a team-best 110 blocks, 35 more than her next closest teammate.
  • The Lions will honor seniors Fabiola Rosado, Victoria Omoregie, Anilise Fitzi, Allie Daul, Nina Vattovaz and Annabella Arcari prior to tonight's match. The six have helped lead Saint Leo to three-straight NCAA Regional appearances in their four year careers with their sights set on four-straight this season.
  • Florida Tech enters Friday's match riding an eight-match losing streak in which the Panthers have won just two sets which came in a 3-2 loss versus Florida Southern. Audrey Keenan leads the team with 2.92 kills per set.
  • Embry-Riddle has won eight of their last 10 matches heading into this weekend. Kristin vom Schemm has led the team this season with 3.29 kills per set followed closely by Jordan Schumacher at 3.22. Jenna Bishop has been patrolling the net with 97 total blocks.
  • Saint Leo men's basketball hosts the Saint Leo Classic, welcomingin Tampa, Flagler and Georgia College for a two-day four game classic.
  • The Schedule Saturday, Nov. 16, Tampa and Flagler will square off first at 12 p.m. before the Lions and Bobcats at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17 at 12 p.m., Tampa and Georgia College will go head-to-head before Saint Leo and Flagler at 2:30 p.m.
  • The Lions are coming into the weekend with a 1-1 record after dropping the season opener to no. 16 Ala.-Huntsville, 56-48, and defeating Montevallo, 71-58 Nov. 9-10. On the season, three players are averaging double-figures led by Isaiah Hill's 14.5 points per game, following by Yalen Reed (11.0 ppg) and Wade Coomer (10.0 ppg). Reed leads the team in rebounding with 7.0 rebounds per game.
  • Tampa enters the weekend with an 0-2 record having dropped games to Montevallo (72-64) and no. 16 Ala.-Huntsville (75-68). Three Spartans average double-figures paced by Pat Bacon with 21.5 points per game. Jonathan Bryant falls right behind Bacon with 14.0 ppg, ahead of Vincent BIffle's 13.0 ppg. Bacon leads the team in rebounding with 5.0 rebounds per game.
  • Flagler enters the weekend classic at 1-2, opening the year with a 84-66 win over Southern Wesleyan before two straight losses to Anderson (90-75) and Embry-Riddl (108-99). Three Saints average double-digits led by Gedi Juozapaitis at 24.7. Derrick Ellis, Jr. is second on the team in scoring with 16.7 points per game, edging out Damerit Brown at 16.3 ppg. Juozapaitis leads the team in rebounds with 9.3 per game.
  • Georgia College enters the weekend at 1-1 with a loss to Erskine (78-62) and a win over North Greenville (72-63). Jordan Thomas is the top scorer at 26.0 points per game ahead of teammates Wesley SImpson and Christian Koneman at 10.0 points per game.
  • History vs Opponents Saint Leo will face Georgia College for the first time in program history at 2:30 pm on the court inside the Marion Bowman Activities Center. The Lions will then look to take the lead in the series matchup with Flagler, currently standing at 4-4 all-time. In the last meeting, the Saints won 75-70 in St. Augustine. The Green and Gold are 3-1 at home all-time against Flagler winning the 2013 matchup at home 76-65.
