Moriera’s Double OT Goal Lifts Lions Over Tars

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's soccer team clinched a 3-2 double overtime thriller at Rollins on Wednesday at the Bark Family Stadium. The Lions and Tars went back-and-forth throughout the night but it would be Dylan Moriera who settled it in the 100th minute for the Green and Gold.

Saint Leo (5-5, 2-2 SSC) recorded the first strike in the twenty-sixth minute. Federico Tellechea connected with Elias Niesigk who netted this third goal of the season. The goal stood alone after the first 45 minutes of play preceding a high scoring second half.

Rollins (6-3, 3-1 SSC) leveled the game converting a penalty kick awarded in the fifth-second minute. Gabriel Rickmann answered fifteen minutes later with an unassisted goal, to reclaim the lead for the Lions. With the clock ticking down, Rollins continued to urgently press the Green and Gold backline. In the seventy-second minute, Danny Senior found the back, forcing the overtime period.

Saint Leo put together a pair of shots in the first stanza of extra time while Rollins took one shot. Despite action on both sides of the field, the conference foes needed more time for a decision.

Thirty-eight seconds into double overtime, Federico Toschi slung a shot in the bottom left corner of the net where it was met with a save by the Tars' goalkeeper, Maximillian Obermeier. Obermeier registered the save but couldn't hold onto the ball. Dylan Moriera knew exactly what to do with the loose scramble, clinching the road victory.

Overall, the Tars took more shots than the Lions, 19-8, allowing for a big night by the senior goalkeeper Wessel Berenschot. Berenschot earned five saves in the 100:38 minutes of action, improving his season record to 3-3.

On Saturday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m., the Green and Gold return home to the Saint Leo Soccer Field to host the defending national champions, Barry.
