Lions Ledger: Homecoming 2019 Is Here!

Oct 31, 2019

Live Coverage |
  • Saint Leo returns home to face Barry and Palm Beach Atlantic in a pair of key Sunshine State Conference matches. The Lions will face Barry Friday night at 7 p.m. followed by a 4 p.m. match-up Saturday against PBA.
  • Barry has a 48-16 lead in the all-time series with the Lions including winning 37 of the first 38 meetings between the two squads. The series has swung the other direction since 2006 as the Lions hold a 15-12 mark during that time frame.
  • The Lions have won four-straight against the Sailfish including a 3-1 victory on the road earlier this season. The Lions' 3-2 victory in West Palm Beach in 2017 over the then-No. 3 ranked Sailfish snapped an eight-match losing streak for the Lions in the series.
  • Saint Leo senior Victoria Omoregie became just the seventh Lion all-time to reach 1,000 career kills after her 12-kill performance against Florida Southern. She now has 1,010 career kills and sits just 42 away from a tie for sixth place in the record book. Omoregie is the first Lion to join the 1,000 career kills club since 2016 when Hope Lemon (2013-16) achieved the feat during her senior campaign.
  • Senior Anilise Fitzi and junior Ashley Quero have been leading the Lions offensively this season. Fitzi had a team-best 219 kills heading into this weekend while Quero was sitting at 217. Overall the Lions have six attackers averaging over 2.00 kills per set with Quero (2.82) and junior Michelle Cuervo (2.56) leading the charge. Fitzi has been doing the work defensively as she entered the weekend with 92 blocks nearly 30 more than her nearest teammate.
  • The Lions will honor the 2009 Sunshine State Conference Co-Regular Season Champions during Friday night's match. The championship was the first for the Saint Leo volleyball program.
  • Barry has dropped four of its last five matches heading into this weekend with the Buccaneers lone win during the stretch being a 3-0 sweep of Florida Southern on the road. Barry is led by Megi Buvinic and Kristina Filimonova who have 260 and 258 kills, respectively, on the season.
  • Palm Beach Atlantic has lost three of their last four heading into this weekend with their lone win being a 3-1 victory over Florida Southern on the road. Sam Wolf has been their go-to attacker averaging 3.65 kills per set.
  • Saint Leo dropped a 1-0 battle to Lynn on Wednesday.
  • Carolina Solis-Deleon paces the Lions' offense with five goals. In the net, Julia Ortiz has earned 64 stops with a 5-9-1 record between the pipes.
  • Senior night will celebrate the careers of Rebecca Niblett, Adriana Tirado, Emily Baker, Julia Ortiz, and Rebecca Anderson before the kickoff against Florida Southern.
  • Florida Southern carries a two-game losing skid after facing Barry and Embry-Riddle. On the season, Rachel Peck leads the attack with three goals followed by Madison Hald with two goals. Goalkeeper, Jenny Staten, has earned 34 stops inside a 4-7-2 season.
  • Last time the opponents faced each other on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018, Florida Southern downed Saint Leo 3-0 in Lakeland, Fla.
