Basketball host PBA as Swimming travels to Florida Tech

Swimming Notes
  • The Lions travel to Melbourne, Fla., Saturday afternoon for their first action of 2019.
  • The men will face off against host Florida Tech while the women will do battle with both the Panthers and conference foe Lynn.
  • Saint Leo defeated FIT on the men's side to open the season at home back in October 166-95. Freshman Hampus Lovinge led the squad with three individual victories while also leading off the winning 200 medley relay.
  • The women opened up the 2018-19 season at home against both Lynn and Florida Tech back in October as well and walked away with a pair of victories. The Lions edged Lynn 128-124 while toppling the Panthers 151-100. Saint Leo won seven of the 14 events contested at the meet as junior transfer Julia Chmielewska and sophomore transfer Paulina Majszutowicz each won a pair of individual events and also teamed up to take home the 200 medley relay.
  • The Saint Leo men are currently ranked 15th in the TYR/CSCAA Division II Poll while the Florida Tech men sit in 19th.

Women's Basketball Notes
  • The Saint Leo women's basketball team closed out the first half of play in the Sunshine State Conference season on Wednesday against No. 12 Florida Southern. The Lions fell 68-34 as the Moccasins extended their win streak to 14-straight.  Olivia Lough reached double-digit scoring with a team-high of 10 points. She was followed by Gina Brierley with nine points. 
  • On the season, Casey Wortley excels around the arch and inside the paint, averaging 10.1 PPG.
  • Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team lost 95-70 inside Rubin Arena against Nova Southeastern on Wednesday. Min Salhia finished with a season-high 17 points to lead the Sailfish on the night, as she shot 7-for-14 from the field. Jonika Garvin helped with 16 points and eight rebounds.
  • On the season, Garvin holds the team's highest average points with 15.8 PPG. Ciara Cumbie dominates underneath the basket, securing 7.3 RPG for the Sailfish.  
  • The matchup: The Saint Leo edges Palm Beach Atlantic in points per game. The Lions average 56.7 PPG while the Sailfish put up 53.8. Off the window, Palm Beach Atlantic averages 35.1 RPG while Saint Leo snatches an average of 34.4.
  • Last Meeting:  Last meeting on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2018, Casey Wortley's career-high double-double lifted the Lions 50-45 over the Sailfish.

Men's Basketball Notes
  • Saint Leo looks to protect its home court after snapping a four-game win streak at Florida Southern, with an 86-83 loss Wednesday night. Kyran McClure paced all scorers with a career-high 30 points on the night. The Lions have won their previous two home games, 71-57 over Florida Tech and 82-77 over Barry.
  • On the year, three players average double-figures for the Green and Gold where Kyran McClure averages 16.5 points per game, just ahead of Junior Searcy at 11.8 ppg and Isaiah Hill at 10.0 ppg. Yalen Reed leads the team in rebounding averaging 5.5 per game while averaging 9.4 ppg.
  • Kyran McClure enters the game ranked no. 26 in the nation in free throw percentage shooting at 89.0-percent, having made 105-of-118 on the year.
  • Palm Beach Atlantic enters the game after dropping a 100-95 decision to no. 5 Nova Southeastern. The Sailfish saw De'Ondre Jackson lead the way with 20 points, ahead of Jules Jasmin with 18, Malek Barber with 16 and Paxton Wilson with 11 points.
  • On the year, Jules Jasmin and De'Ondre Jackson are the lone two double-figure averages with 14.6 and 14.3 ppg, respectively. Jasmin leads the team in rebounding with 5.5 per game.
  • The Matchup: Saint Leo enters the weekend tilt tied for fifth at 5-5 in conference play averaging 74.1 points per game and allowing 75.2 ppg, where Palm Beach Atlantic is sitting in seventh at 4-6 and averages 74.7 ppg and allows 75.2 ppg.
  • The Series: Saint Leo won the first tilt 71-66 in West Palm Beach where Kyran McClure and De'Ondre Jackson both dropped 20 points in the contest. Yalen Reed and Junior Searcy joined McClure in double-figures with 15 and 11 points, respectively. In the past 10 years of meetings, the Lions hold a 13-6 record against the Sailfish where in the four years under the direction of Vince Alexander, Saint Leo holds a 4-3 edge.
