DENVER, Colo. – After spending day one of the Colorado Premier Challenge at Regis University, the Saint Leo volleyball team moved over to Metropolitan State University of Denver for the second day of action. The Lions battled toe-to-toe with Angelo State and host MSU Denver but came up on the short end of a pair of 3-0 setbacks.
Â
The pair of losses moves Saint Leo's seasonal record to 3-5 while Angelo State improved to 7-2 and MSU Denver closed out the weekend at 4-4.
Â
Sophomore
Ashley Quero was the lone Lion to reach double-figure kills in each match as she put down 10 in each contest. Juniors
Victoria Omoregie and
Annabella Arcari came up just short of double-digits against MSU Denver as the chipped in nine kills apiece.
"Overall we never found ourselves in a situation to build any solid momentum," said interim head coach
Erik Peterson. "We struggled to control the ball and let opportunities slip through our fingers when we had the chance to capitalize. Time to watch some video so we can get after it this week heading into conference play."
Â
The Lion setters each had 12 assists in the opening match on Saturday but freshman
Cassandra Kamien did the heavy lifting in the nightcap handing out 31 of the team's 35 assists. Libero
Payton Bellano continued her double-digit digs streak with 11 in the first match and 19 in the second contest.
Â
The Lions struggled to find their offensive swings hitting just over .100 as a team over the two contests while their two opponents combined to hit for a .182 percentage.
Â
Every set on Saturday was highly-contested as Saint Leo battled for every point. Angelo State took the victory 25-23, 25-18 and 25-19 while MSU Denver won a very close match 25-22, 25-21 and 25-21.
Â
Saint Leo will return to campus to begin preparations for its first Sunshine State Conference weekend of the season. A trip to Eckerd on Friday, Sept. 7 gets things rolling before the Lions host nationally-ranked Florida Southern on Saturday at 4:00 p.m., inside the Marion Bowman Activities Center. Â
