LAKELAND, Fla. – Historic day at historic Henley Field for the 16th-ranked Saint Leo baseball team where
Jordan Pendleton and
Peyton Isaacson each tied program records from the mound as the Lions spoiled the Florida Southern Moccasins' senior day. Saint Leo won game one Friday 4-1 before holding on for a 9-8 game two decision to win the Sunshine State Conference series over the second-ranked Florida Southern Moccasins. With the two wins, Saint Leo climbs to 36-10 overall and 19-8 in the SSC on the year.
Jordan Pendleton won game one to move to 7-1 on the year and 27-10 as a starting pitcher for the Green and Gold where he ties the program record for wins in a career. Pendleton shares the title with Dave Garcia who had 27 wins for the Lions from 1993-96.
Peyton Isaacson picked up his 14th save of the season in game two to allow the Lions to sweep the day as Isaacon ties the program single season saves record, shared with
Chris Macca who had 14 saves in 1995.
The Lions' bats were red-hot on the day where the Green and Gold scattered 25 hits between the games with
Amir Wright and
Derek Gibree pace the team with five hits.
Brett Coffel and
Lane Stancil each notched three hits between the two games. Saint Leo saw three doubles and a home run from four different players.Â
Game One - #16 Saint Leo 4, #2 Florida Southern 1
Saint Leo came out in the first game of the doubleheader and took a two run lead after two scoreless frames by both teams. The Lions added two runs in the third inning after
Jared Morello singled in
Derek Gibree and
Chase Turner singled in Morello.
The Lions added two more in the seventh inning to keep their distance from the Moccasins as
Amir Wright singled through the right side driving in
Lane Stancil.
Peyton Isaacson came up and made it 4-0 with a single to right field allowing Gibree to come in from third.
The Mocs got their lone run in the bottom half with a two out double to left field.
Jordan Pendleton pitched the complete game for his seventh win of the season on 87 pitches, 59 of which were strikes. The senior from Palm Harbor, Fla., allowed just one unearned run on eight hits while striking out six batters.
Derek Gibree led the way with three hits in the first game while
Amir Wright and
Jared Morello each tallied two.
Peyton Isaacson,
Chase Turner,
Zach Scott, and
Lane Stancil all notched one hit.
Game Two - #16 Saint Leo 9, #2 Florida Southern 8
Despite giving up five runs in the ninth inning, Saint Leo held on to complete the sweep of the Mocs Friday with a 9-8 series finale. The Lions scored two runs in the third, fourth and five in the eighth for their nine runs where the Mocs scored one run in the third, fifth, sixth and five in the ninth.
Saint Leo got on the board first with a two-run homer from
Amir Wright in the third inning, scoring
Tate Sweatt from second.
After the Mocs cut it to 2-1, the Lions added two more in the fourth as
Lane Stancil hit a two-out, two-run double to right field, scoring
Brett Coffel and
Peyton Isaacson.
Florida Southern scored to cut it to 4-3 before the Green and Gold exploded for five runs in the eighth inning.
Zach Scott got things started with a two out double to left center before coming in on a Coffel single. Stancil would follow Coffel up with a single of his own before Sweatt walked to load the bases for
Derek Gibree. Gibree would double to right field clearing the bases making it 8-3. Wright would continue his great day from the plate with a single scoring Gibree to make it 9-3.
Heading to the ninth with a 9-3 lead, the Lions slipped up allowing five runs in the ninth to make it a 9-8 ball game with two on and two outs.
Peyton Isaacson would move from behind the plate to on the bump, looking to save the contest. Isaacson would get the final out to ground out to Morello over at first to end the game.
Amir Wright and
Brett Coffel went 3-for-5 where Wright had three-RBI with a home run.
Derek Gibree and
Lane Stancil each went 2-for-4 with a double where
Zach Scott had a double on his stat sheet.

No. 16 Saint Leo returns home to host Embry-Riddle on May 11-12 for the regular season finale. First pitch Friday is set for 6pm . The Lions will honor their seniors Saturday before the doubleheader against the Eagles.
