SAINT LEO, Fla. - The NCAA Division II South Super Regional between the No. 25 Saint Leo University Lions and the No. 16 University of Alabama in Huntsville Chargers was postponed until Friday, May 18 at 10 am. The Lions and Chargers battled for two hours and 29 minutes before weather rolled in, causing a delay in play. The game is currently tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth with one out and a runner at second for the Green and Gold.
The Chargers came out of the gate quick with a three-run bomb in the top of the first inning. Saint Leo battled back and scored two in the bottom half to cut things to 3-2 UAH.
Neither team could score in the second, third or fourth innings before the Green and Gold tied the game in the bottom of the fifth.
Ashley Morris led off the inning and singled through the left side.
Shyanne DuBois came up and laid down the bunt and beat out the throw allowing the Lions to have two on and no outs.
Sarah Pauscher came to the plate and sacrificed herself allowing the two on base, Morris and DuBois, to advance to second and third before
Alexis Miniet grounded out to first allowing Morris to come in to score. UAH would get out of the inning with a groundout stranding a Saint Leo runner.
Saint Leo would strand a runner in the sixth and seventh inning where
Alison Mitts got out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the seventh to strand three Chargers on base, holding the game to a 3-3 tie. The Lions and Chargers went to the eighth inning tied at 3-3 where Mitts sat down the side in order.
Bailey Burk led off for the Lions and was hit by a pitch.
Bailey McKenna gave herself up to move Burk to second for
Brittany Creamer before things were halted in the bottom of the eighth.
The Lions and Chargers will resume play at 10 a.m. Friday morning at University Softball Stadium in the bottom of the eighth with a runner at second, one out and the eight-hole hitter at the plate. Game two of the best-of-three series will be played immediately following the completion of game one where the if necessary game will be scheduled tentatively for Saturday.
