Four Run Fifth Not Enough for Softball Against #8 Sailfish

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Trailing 2-0 with three innings to play, Saint Leo softball posted a four-run fifth inning to take a 4-2 lead before allowing the No. 8 Sailfish of Palm Beach Atlantic escape captivity in the Sunshine State Conference series opener with a four-run seventh. PBA would hold off the Lions and take game one of the series 6-4.

Saint Leo (32-13, 16, 12 SSC) saw six players record a hit on the night in Kacie Kelly, Shyanne DuBois, Amanda James, Alyssa Wash, Alexis Miniet and Sommer Pollard. Miniet and Wash tallied the lone two extra-base knocks where Miniet hit a double and Wash a home run.

Alison Mitts got the nod and went 4.1 innings with two strikeouts where Auria Mounts, who suffered the loss, pitched 2.2 innings with three strikeouts.

PBA scored two runs in the first inning on a two-run home run to take a 2-0 lead after the first inning, after the Lions left the bases loaded. Both teams played scoreless softball for the next three innings before the Lions scored four runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-2 lead.

With two outs, and two runners on, Amanda James got the Lions on the board with a single up the middle before taking second on the throw home. Alyssa Wash would pinch hit for the Green and Gold and take the 0-1 count deep to left field for a three-run blast to make it 4-2 Saint Leo. Alexis Miniet tried to keep the inning going with a two-out double, but the Lions stranded the her at second.

The score remained at 4-2 Saint Leo heading into the final inning of play. The Sailfish would tack on four runs to regain the lead 6-4 after four runs on six hits in the top half of the inning. The Lions would go down in order to end the game, with Palm Beach Atlantic leading 6-4.
