BRADENTON, Fla. – The first-seed Saint Leo men's tennis team handled fifth-seed Embry-Riddle posting a 5-0 decision in the Sunshine State Conference Semifinals on Friday. The win lifts the Lions' overall record to 21-0 while advancing the Green and Gold to the SSC Championship match.
Saint Leo will face the winner of the second semifinal match between second-seed Barry or third-seed Lynn. The SSC Championship match is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
Saint Leo jumped to a 3-0 lead from doubles play. Third doubles,
Jaime Bueno and
Willem Van Den Akker dished out an 8-2 win followed by first doubles, No. 2,
Thomas Grinberg and
Vincent Suillerot; 8-3. Second doubles,
Francisco Aparicio and
Aurel Ciocanu recorded an 8-6 decision to complete the sweep.
In singles action, No. 1
Thomas Grinberg took care of No. 29 Juan Ortiz Couder 6-3, 6-1. Grinberg enters the SSC Championship match with a perfect 20-0 record. Second singles No. 13
Vincent Suillerot clinched the win downing No. 31 Andres Donayre 6-3, 6-1.
