Pauwels Buzzer Beater Keeps Men’s Lacrosse Perfect in the Sunshine State Conference

SAINT LEO, Fla. –  Tied at 9-9, the No.5 Saint Leo Lions ran the clock down to kill the penalty clock. Returning to an even manned field, Jake Gilmour tossed the ball to Kyle Pauwels who quickly dished it to the back of the No. 7 Tampa Spartans net with a mere two seconds remaining. The 10-9 buzzer beater finale kept Saint Leo perfect in the Sunshine State Conference; Saint Leo now 12-1 overall, 6-0 in the SSC.
 
Charlie Kurtenbach racked up five points from four goals, one assist followed by Pauwels, with two goals. Thomas Tatarian handed in six saves from inside the crease.

1Q | Tampa edged Saint Leo in the first half. The Lions pair of goals came from two unassisted goals: Charlie Kurtenbach and Philip Buque. | Tampa 3-2 |
2Q | Kyle Pauwels' first goal of the night leveled the scoreboard 3-3 at 13:06. Anthony Visintin's unassisted goal forced the first of many lead changes, 4-3 at 11:09. The Spartans answered with a pair of goals to close the quarter. | Tampa 5-4 |
3Q | Kurtenbach tied up the game again but, again, was matched by the hosts. At 9:47, Daniel Sparks' unassisted equalizer brought the game to six goals apiece. Philip Buque's man-up goal assisted by Visintin handed the Lions their first lead in between quarters. | Saint Leo 7-6 |
4Q | Tampa opened the final stanza with a pair of goals. Kurtenbach took it upon himself to answer on behalf of the Lions with back-to-back goals. With the clock winding down, Tampa's Jake Mosher McGraw scored at 3:00. With overtime lurking, Saint Leo maintained possession a man-down. The Lions killed the clock to bring the numbers back to even and took the ball behind the net. Jake Gilmour's quick pass found Pauwels who beat the buzzer. | Saint Leo 10-9 |
