ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The ninth ranked Saint Leo softball team fell 5-2 in the Sunshine State Conference series opener to Eckerd Friday night.
The Lions (22-8, 6-7 SSC) mounted a come back but fell just short to the Tritons. Eckerd scored one run in the third where both teams only registered one hit through three innings. The Tritons would use three runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to move past the Lions, who scored two in the top of the sixth.
Saint Leo right-hander

Kacie Kelly led the offensive with two of the four hits, going 2-for-3 from the no. 2 hole while driving in the lone RBI and scoring one of the two runs herself.
Ashley Morris and
Brittany Creamer were credited with the other two hits where Creamer and Kelly each hit one double on the night.
Trailing 4-0 in the top of the sixth,
Kacie Kelly hit a double to right center scoring
Ashley Morris, who singled to third to get on base. On a muffed catch by the catcher, Kelly would come in for the second run, making it 4-2 Tritons.
Eckerd scored its final run in the bottom half of the sixth on a single.
No. 9 Saint Leo and Eckerd return to the diamond on March 17 at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader.
