WINTER PARK, Fla. – It took just three sets to decide Friday night's volleyball match between the Saint Leo Lions and the Rollins Tars as the Lions coasted to the 3-0 sweep. Saint Leo hit .354 for the match while holding the Tars to a .141 hitting percentage.
Â
Freshman setter
Cassandra Kamien distributed the ball to six different Lions who had five or more kills in the match and finished with 37 assists. She also had nine digs and two kills in the match.
"I'm happy with how we were able to put together a complete match on the road," said interim head coach
Erik Peterson. "Cassie did a great job getting all of our hitters involved and really allowed us to balance our attack. Our hitters made some smart plays and we were able to take advantage of some great swings of momentum."
Â
Sophomore
Ashley Quero led the balanced offensive attack with nine kills on 21 swings for a .381 hitting percentage. Junior middle blockers
Anilise Fitzi and
Annabella Arcari were not far behind with eight kills each in the match. Arcari was the most efficient of the night with her eight kills coming off just 10 swings for an incredible .800 hitting percentage. Fitzi had a hand in the team's only two blocks as she finished with one solo stop and one block assist. Junior
Victoria Omoregie had the other block assist to go along with her seven kills.
Â
Senior libero
Reggie Van Devender was the lone Lion to reach double-figures in digs as she finished with a match-high 12.
Â
The Lions (9-9, 6-4 SSC) held the Tars (3-14, 1-9 SSC) to just 27 kills the entire match with Kerra Tirado leading Rollins with seven.
Â
Rollins took an early 9-4 lead in the opening set but the Lions quickly tied the match at 11 before controlling the rest of the set in route to a 25-16 victory. The second set was all Lions as they nearly held the Tars to single digits, leading 21-9 late in the period. Saint Leo would go on to win the set 25-12. The third set began much like the first with the Tars leading 8-4 early. Saint Leo fought back to tie the set 14 before pulling away late for the 25-21 win. Â Â
Â
Saint Leo will conclude its three-match road swing at No. 8 Tampa Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. The Lions have defeated the Spartans in four-straight meetings for the first time in program history.
