Lions Upset #12 West Florida and Fall to Lee

The Lions picked up their fourth top-25 victory of the season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ORLANDO, Fla. – On the final day of the South Region Crossover the Saint Leo volleyball team picked up another top-25 victory and fell in heartbreaking fashion in their final match of the day. The Lions defeated No. 12 West Florida 3-1 in the early afternoon Saturday before falling 3-2 to Lee in the final match of the tournament.
 
Saint Leo remains even on the season at 13-13 after splitting today's matches.
 
Versus the Argonauts, the Lions used a balanced attack with four hitters reaching double-figures in kills with junior Victoria Omoregie leading the way with 15. Junior Annabella Arcari and sophomore Ashley Quero each added 14 while junior Nina Vattovaz has 13. Omoregie, Arcari and Quero all hit above .355 in the game led by Arcari's .600.
 
The Lions posted a .299 hitting percentage as a team for the match while holding the nationally-ranked Argonauts to .234. The Lions took advantage of strong serving while posting six aces and getting several points off of misplays. Junior Anilise Fitzi led the way with four aces while Vattovaz added two.
 
Freshman Cassandra Kamien dished out 59 assists in just four sets while digging up eight balls. Senior Reggie Van Devender led the team in digs with 19 while Vattovaz added 13.
 
The Lions dominated the first, third and fourth sets while the Argos controlled the second. Saint Leo won its sets 25-18, 25-15 and 25-18 while West Florida won its game 25-21. The Lions jumped all over the Argos in the opening set picking up 23 of their 25 points off kill and holding West Florida to just 12.
 
Vattovaz had a monster match against the Flames of Lee with 23 kills and 23 digs. The junior hit .364 for the match. She was joined in double-figures by Fitzi (14), Quero (13) and Arcari (12). Kamien continued to show why she is one of the top setters in the conference as she dished out 60 assists and dug up 19 balls.
 
Van Devender picked up a team-high 28 digs in the loss while junior Fabiola Rosado had 12.
 
The Lions won the first and third sets and looked to be in control of the fifth but a late rally by the Flames proved to be the difference.
 
Saint Leo will return to action Tuesday night as Eckerd visits the Marion Bowman Activities Center for a 7 p.m. Sunshine State Conference match.
