SAINT LEO, Fla. – No. 21 Saint Leo volleyball dropped their first match of the year at the hands of No. 4 Palm Beach Atlantic 3-0 (27-25, 25-20, 25-23) in Sunshine State Conference action inside the Marion Bowman Activities Center Saturday afternoon.
Coming off the bench,
Britt Sederholm led the Lions (6-1, 1-1 SSC) in hitting percentage ending the day with a .412 clip with nine kills on 17 attempts, while adding five digs for a total of 10 points against Palm Beach Atlantic.
Victoria Omoregie led in kills with 12 for 12 points on a .312 percentage.
Anna Garrett tallied 30 assists and nine digs, one shy of her second straight double-double. Garrett added four block assists in the match, one behind team leader
Annabella Arcari who notched five block assists.
Jenya Kruglova led the charge with 12 digs defensively where the Lions racked up 48 digs against the Sailfish.
Palm Beach Atlantic saw Ally Rohn lead in kills with eight and assists with 17, tying with teammate Molly Burkhardt for team-high. Three Sailfish were in double-digits in digs lead by Raegan Grooms with match-high 15 followed by Burkhardt at 12 and Susie Forbes with 10.
Palm Beach Atlantic 27-25 | Saint Leo would control the first half of the first set as the Lions jumped out to a quick 8-3 lead forcing a PBA timeout after five kills and three attack errors by the Sailfish. PBA rallied back to take a 14-13 lead before the Lions took a timeout, attempting to kill momentum and it did just that, scoring the first two points out of the timeout, 15-14. The two teams would be knotted up again eight times at 16-16, 18-18, 19-19, 20-20, 21-21, 24-24, and 25-25 before PBA put the set away with a kill by Abby Palkert.
Palm Beach Atlantic 25-20 | Roles flipped in the second set as PBA climbed out to an early 8-4 lead forcing a Saint Leo timeout. The Lions had trouble getting over the three point hump as they could not get inside the three point threshold of the Sailfish. PBA would hold a three point lead before going on for a five point set win, 25-20.
Palm Beach Atlantic 25-23 | Out of the gate in the third set, Saint Leo and Palm Beach Atlantic would play close volleyball as the two teams were tied seven times prior to the Sailfish taking a 9-7 lead. The Lions would roar back to tie it at 16 apiece moments before PBA got a kill, killing the Saint Leo momentum. PBA took the next point out of a Saint Leo timeout before the Lions tied things up at 18-18 and again at 21-21 as
Annabella Arcari and
Nina Vattovaz blocked Maddie Span.
Victoria Omoregie would kill a ball from
Anna Garrett to tie things up 22-22 before the Lions fell behind 24-23 and 25-23 to end the match.
The Lions will travel to Tampa Sept. 26 to make up a contest scheduled for Sept. 15 as they take on the Spartans at 7 p.m. inside the Bob Martinez Athletics Center.
