ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – No. 21 Saint Leo volleyball picked up its fourth sweep of the season and fifth win of the year after taking down Flagler 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 26-24).
After 16 days off, the Lions were finally back on the court where they took down Flagler 3-0 to move to 5-0 on the year, behind
Nina Vattovaz's 13 kill performance. Vattovaz added 11 digs to complete her first career double-double.
Victoria Omoregie and
Ashley Quero added eight and six kills, respectively, where
Anna Garrett notched 31 assists.
Jenya Kruglova scooped up 15 digs, one ahead of
Britt Sederholm (14) and four better than Vattovaz's 11.
Annabella Arcari tallied three blocks on the night as
Allie Daul,
Paloma Da Silva and Vattovaz each picked up two aces on the night.
On the night, the Lions' hitters finished with a .144 hitting percentage with a .214 set high in the second set. Saint Leo recorded 39 kills in the match with 13-16-10, respectively.
Saint Leo 25-22 | In the first set, Saint Leo jumped out to a 5-1 lead before the Saints stormed back to tie it 8-8 early on. The Lions climbed out to a 15-11 lead before a Flagler timeout led to three straight Saints' points, 15-14. After both teams went on 3-0 runs, Flagler tied it 19-19 forcing a Lion timeout, where the Lions would outscore the Saints 6-3 to take the opening set.
Saint Leo 25-20 | The second set would start out tight before the Lions scored seven straight points to take a 14-7 lead causing two Flagler timeouts. Momentum slowly started to move towards the home team before a Saint Leo timeout allowed the Lions to regroup, leading 22-15. The Green and Gold would take the second set 25-20 to move out to a 2-0 match lead, heading into the intermission.
Saint Leo 26-24 | A short break allowed the Saints to regroup and take the first three points in the third set before Lions tied it 4-4. Saint Leo charged out to a 14-9 lead before tides turned and the Saints went marching past Saint Leo, taking their first lead late in a set, 16-15 and 17-16. Saint Leo forced a Flagler timeout after recapturing the lead, 20-17, and continued to do so until the Saints knotted things back up at 22-22 and 24-24. A Omoregie kill pushed Saint Leo up 25-24 before a service ace by Da Silva allowed the Lions to sweep the Saints 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 26-24).
Saint Leo returns home to open its home portion of the 2017 season when they host Rollins on Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. before hosting No. 4 Palm Beach Atlantic on Sept. 23 at 4 p.m. inside the Marion Bowman Activities Center.
