Saint Leo women's basketball welcomed
Amber Moore as the newest member of the coaching staff in October 2017.
"Amber brings big time college and professional game experience," says head coach
Anthony Crocitto. "She was highly recommended to our program through Chris Mennig (Blue Star). Chris is someone who I respect as much as anyone in the business. Amber will hit the ground running and assist with player development, recruiting and scouting. We are very excited to have Amber here as she represents the professionalism and class we expect in our program."
Moore joins the Lions' staff after an impressive career of her own. Originally from Detroit, Mich., Moore earned her undergraduate at the University of Illinois. The shooting guard currently holds Illinois' career record mark in three pointers made with 295 (126 games) and career free throw accuracy going .847 (172-203) at the line. After her undergrad career, she continued to play in Europe, competing for professional teams in Slovakia and Finland for one year each. After returning to the States, Moore tabbed her first coaching gig as an assistant coach for Urbana High School (Urbana, Ill.).
"We did a lot of community service and held basketball camps for kids at Illinois," explains Moore when asked when she knew she wanted to go into coaching. "It was towards the end of my collegiate career when I realized I wanted to coach. It was really fun to give back, which is something that I really pride myself on doing. If I can teach or help young women do what I've done and get to where I have been, then that is what I want to do."
Moore and the Lions' coaching staff and 15 players are looking forward to the upcoming season.
"We have a good core group of women. They are excited about the season and ready to feed off all the knowledge we have as a staff. We have a lot of work ahead of us but we are excited and young. It is super exciting to have seven freshmen; young legs, fresh bodies, ready to grab all the knowledge this coaching staff has," says Moore.
When asked why she loves basketball she smiles and says, "I have been playing basketball since I was three. I had the Fisher-Price hoop when I was little and just stuck with it. Basketball is something that I just love."
