SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo volleyball took down cross town rival Tampa to complete the season sweep of the Spartans with a 3-1 win Tuesday night in a Sunshine State Conference matchup inside the Marion Bowman Activities Center. The Lions defeated the Spartans 3-1 (25-17, 20-25, 25-13, 25-16) to move to 14-5 overall and 8-3 in the SSC.
Britt Sederholm tallied her second straight double-double with team-high 13 kills and 15 digs where
Anna Garrett joined her with her seventh double-double of the season with 40 assists and 15 digs to help the Lions defeat the Spartans for the fourth straight meeting.
Victoria Omoregie finished the night with 11 kills where
Ashley Quero tied for the team lead with 13. Both Quero and Omoregie finished the night with a .250 hitting percentage.
Saint Leo held the Spartans to a .058 hitting percentage as a team while recording 13 blocks led by
Dallas Jasper and
Allie Daul with five apiece.
Sammy Mueller paced the Spartans (11-11, 6-5 SSC) with 29 assists where Molly McAlvany was the team leader with match-high 18 digs.
SAINT LEO 25-17 | The Lions and Spartans started the match even with back-and-forth play. After a 9-9 set, three straight kills from
Britt Sederholm,
Ashley Quero, and
Anna Garrett put the Lions up 12-9. A
Victoria Omoregie kill forced a Tampa timeout with the Lions leading 16-12. After three straight errors by the Spartans, Tampa used their second and final timeout trailing 19-14. The Lions would tally three kills over the final nine points where the Spartans tallied three errors giving the Lions a 25-17 first set win.
TAMPA 25-20 | The second set would see 10 score ties with four lead changes with the Spartans taking the quick 1-0 lead. The Lions and Spartans would fight to a 10-10 set, before the momentum shifted to the Spartans forcing a Saint Leo timeout at 15-12 UT. Tampa came out of the timeout looking to even things up, going on a 6-4 run to take a 21-16 lead with another Lions timeout. Back-to-back kills by
Ashley Quero and
Anna Garrett brought the Lions within three, but fell behind by five before dropping the set by five, 25-20.
SAINT LEO 25-13 | With the score tied 1-1, Tampa scored the first point on an attack error. Once
Victoria Omoregie registered a kill to even things at 1-1, the Lions ripped off 14 straight points off
Avery Bradshaw's serve before a service error allowed the Spartans their second point of the set, 14-2 Saint Leo. Tampa scored five straight points closing it to 14-6, before Saint Leo Director of Volleyball called a quick timeout. Out of the timeout, Saint Leo scored five points to Tampa's three before a free point to the Lions due to out of rotation gave the Lions a 20-9 lead. Saint Leo closed the set scoring five of the final nine points, capitalized by
Ashley Quero hitting the ponytail of the Spartans' libero to finish off the set.
SAINT LEO 25-16 | Despite the Lions going up 1-0 quick in the fourth, Tampa would battle the Lions and earn leads at 5-4 and 6-5 before an attack error gave the ball to
Reggie Van Devender. Van Devender would serve four points to put the Lions ahead 9-7. At 10-7, a ball hit by
Britt Sederholm would originally be called out before it was overturned giving the point to the Lions for a 11-7 lead. Tampa's head coach was issued a yellow card before taking a timeout. The Spartans closed to four points, 14-10, out of the timeout before a free point from the Lions error on rotation order. With three of the next four points, Saint Leo took a 17-12 lead forcing the final timeout of the set from Tampa. Two attack errors from the Spartans and a kill by
Victoria Omoregie would give the Lions an eight point margin, 20-12, before two straight points for Tampa. The Spartans closed to 22-15 before Omoregie tallied two straight kills to give the Lions a 24-15 cushion. Saint Leo and Tampa would close out the fourth set exchanging points, 1-1, to give the final set to the Lions 25-16.
Saint Leo heads to No. 3 Palm Beach Atlantic on Oct. 27 for a 7 p.m. matchup before heading to Winter Park on Oct. 28 to tango with Rollins at 4 p.m.
