DAVIE, Fla. – Saint Leo women's soccer struck first with its goal in the 73rd minute, but host No .9 Nova Southeastern responded twice over the next two-and-a-half minutes and survived for a 2-1 win over the Lions, in a Sunshine State Conference match Saturday night at the NSU Soccer Complex.
Senior Victoria Covas tallied her third goal of the season with 17:35 remaining in regulation, when she finished a give-and-go play from Rosie Young. Saint Leo enjoyed that advantage for just 23 seconds, when the Sharks tied things up at 1-1 on a Hannah Christophe header. Barely two minutes later, Emma Heikkila gave NSU the lead with her unassisted goal – a free kick lofted into the left side of the net.
The Lions staged a furious counterattack over the remaining 15 minutes of play, outshooting the Sharks 4-1 during that span, but were unable to find the equalizer.
Nova Southeastern had a 15-11 advantage in total shots as well as a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. The Sharks were whistled for offsides on four occasions, and took five corner kicks to Saint Leo's four.
