Baseball falls to Florida Tech in series finale

Box Score

MELBOURNE, Fla. --  Saint Leo baseball dropped a 13-5 decision to Florida Tech on Sunday at Seminick-Les Hall Field, in the final game of a three-game Sunshine State Conference series.

Saint Leo completes the series with a 25-18 overall record, 8-10 in the SSC, while Florida Tech improves to 26-18, 8-10 SSC.

Florida Tech took a 3-0 lead after two innings, but Saint Leo managed to get on the board in the top of the third on Zach Daley's RBI single. The Lions tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the fourth, thanks to Shane Williams' two-run single up the middle allowing Derek Gibree and Bryan Nunez to score.

The Panthers answered with six runs on seven hits and one Saint Leo error in the bottom of the fourth, retaking a lead at 9-3 that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game. Florida Tech added three more runs in the fifth inning, anchored by Ryan Sinzenich's two-run single down the left field line, to extend its advantage to 12-3.

Saint Leo got two runs back in the seventh, with Daley again keying the Lions' offense on his single to center that plated Alex Mata and Troy Sieber.

FIT tacked on one more run in the bottom of the eight for the final 13-5 score.

Sieber finished the day 3-for-4 at the plate and scored two runs, while Daley was 2-for-4 with three runs batted in. Shane Haight lasted an inning-and-two-thirds in the start and allowed three runs, all earned. Reliever Andrew Cohen also went an inning-and-two-thirds, allowing six runs, five earned, on seven hits and was charged with the loss.

Florida Tech pounded out 20 hits on the day, with John Sternagel, Daniel Szpik, James Gronberg, and Kevin Capella each finishing with three hits. Panther reliever Luke Lorah picked up the win, after coming on for starter Andy Marzheuser in the fourth inning.

Saint Leo completes its 2016 home slate next weekend when it hosts Eckerd College for a three-game series. Game one will be Saturday, April 30, at 7:00 p.m., followed by a doubleheader on Sunday, May 1, at 1:00 p.m.
