Saint Leo falls in road action, 13-11

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's lacrosse team fell 13-11 in just their second road game of the season on Friday evening, taking the loss at the hands of Sunshine State Conference foe, Florida Tech.

Despite a high-scoring third quarter, the Lions were unable to stop the Panthers in the final quarter to overcome the difference in score.

Both seniors Chad Marino and Dylan Yonts finished the game with four points, both on three goals and one assists. Charlie Kurtenbach added two goals out of the midfield. Defensively, Eric Lee recorded a career-best five caused turnovers.

1Q | Florida Tech opened up the scoring as the Panthers' Jason Terry netted the opener. Saint Leo's Charlie Kurtenbach evened the score off a pass from Dylan Yonts, tying it up at one-all. With one minute left, Brian Bacarella gave the panthers the lead, swinging in from behind the net. He added another with just 11.3-seconds left to end the quarter. | FIT 3-1 |

2Q | Less than a minute into the quarter, a weather delay was called, giving both teams time gather themselves. Out of the break, Kurtenbach add another to cut the Panthers' lead to 3-2. But Terry tagged on his second to bring the lead back up to two for FIT. Yonts added a goal of his own, bringing it to 4-3. The Lions called a timeout with 1:11 to play, and out of the break, Chad Marino recorded the goal to tie the game. |4-4|

3Q | Covey opened up the scoring with a swing around, behind the back shot to break the tie. Matt Scharr hit Marino with the pass and Marino ripped in the bounce shot to tie it back up. Covey followed up with his second game off a Bacarella goal. Marino again answered, tallying his hat-trick, tying it up at 6. Following Marino's goal, a penalty was assessed to Panthers, and the Lions utilized the man-up situation as Yonts ripped a shot from the front of the cage, giving the Lions their first lead of the game, 7-6. Yonts added his third goal of the game off a pass from Scharr, giving a two-goal cushion. Terry added his third for the hat-trick off a pass from Logan Sweeney, and just seconds later, Bacarella evened the score for the Panthers, 8-8. Joe Donnian gave the Lions the lead, ripping a man-up goal off a pass from Scharr. Matt Weinstein tied it back up for the Panthers. FIT's Nick Brown sprinted down the field and added the go-ahead goal | FIT 10-9 |

4Q | Jake Gilmour opened the final period with his first goal of the game, tying it up at 10, but just seconds later, FIT tagged on another. And just a minute after that, the Panthers made it a two-goal game, 12-10. Terry tallied his fourth, bringing the score up to 13-10. Scharr snagged the man-up goal off Gilmour's dish, cutting the game to 13-11. With 3:21 on the clock, the Lions called a timeout. The following possession ended in a turnover for the Lions on the attempt to get Yonts the ball. The Lions were able to get the ball back, and FIT's keeper saved a rip by Marino, but on the clear attempt, Marino snagged the throw out of the air. And the Lions again called a timeout, this time with 57.2 on the clock, down, 13-11. Again, a turnover haunted the Lions out of the TO. The Lions were able to get it back, but there was not enough time to make a difference. | FIT 13-11 |
