Box Score SAINT LEO, Fla. – The long ball propelled Saint Leo's baseball team past Webber International 13-9 on Tuesday, March 22nd at Thomas B. Southard Stadium.
The Lions, who improve to 18-10 overall, scattered 15 hits for 13 runs and had one error. Saint Leo had three home runs, three doubles and two triples. Alex Mata went 4-for-4 from the plate with one sacrifice fly as he finished the game with two doubles, one triple and one homerun in the game. Michael Mann and Brett Coffel were the other two Lions who hit home runs. Mann hit a pinch hit dinger in the bottom of the sixth, where Coffel hit his home run in the bottom of the eighth.
Webber International got on the board first right out of the gates as Lenin Sanchez singled and came around to score on a Taylor Layner single.
Saint Leo responded in the bottom of the inning as Lane Stancil started the Lions off with a single up middle. Stancil stole second before the double steal was on and had himself on third before an Alex Mata sacrifice fly to even the score at one a piece.
The Lions scored two in the third and fourth as Mata cleared the bases with a two-run RBI triple to center field. Derek Gibree drove in one run in the fourth inning as Chase Turner singled to bring in the other runi in the inning, on a hit that went just five feet in front of the plate, and beat out the throw.
A seven run seventh inning for the Warriors brought Webber International in front of the Lions 9-5. The grand-slam for the Warriors came off the bat of Daniel Aviles, as he blasted one to left field.
Michael Mann came in and took the first pitch he saw of the night for a no-doubter to left field, to lead off the Lions' charge in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 9-9. Troy Sieber hit a sac fly to center field scoring Bryan Nunez. Another double by Mata brought in both Stancil and Gibree. Zach Daley roped one down the right field line, driving in the final run of the inning, as Mata touched home plate for the Lions' 10-9 lead.
The Lions tacked on three more in the bottom of the eighth to go on for their 13-9 victory over the Warriors. Sieber smacked a one out triple to left center before Mata blasted the two-run homer to right field. Coffel went deep to left field on a 3-2 count for the final run of the game.
Jordan Pendleton came in, in the top of the ninth to close the door on the Warriors in the top of the ninth, with one strikeout, a groundout and a pop out.
Saint Leo returns to the diamond on Thursday, March 24, at 6:00 p.m. when it travels to Nova Southeastern to get back into Sunshine State Conference play.
