Box Score 2 SAINT LEO, Fla. – For the second day in a row, Saint Leo triumphed in walk-off fashion with a 19-18 win over Sunshine State Conference-rival Rollins College, in game one of a Saturday doubleheader at Thomas B. Southard Stadium.
The Lions completed the series sweep over the Tars with a 5-3 win in game two, improving to 17-10 overall on the season, 3-3 in SSC play. Saint Leo has now won 10 straight over Rollins, dating back to the 2014 season.
In game one, Lane Stancil plated the game winner in the bottom of the ninth with a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Tully Allen. Allen got aboard with a lead-off single to third base, and advanced to second on an errant throw by the Rollins third baseman. He was sacrificed over to third by Derek Gibree, setting up Stancil for the walk-off win.
The Lions held a 15-1 lead after two innings, after scoring 10 runs in the first inning alone on nine hits and two hit batters. Stancil keyed the inning with a two-out, bases-loaded triple to right center, extending Saint Leo's lead to 7-0 at the time.
Rollins erased much of that lead in the top of the fifth with 12 runs, including a gram slam by Peter Nicoletto to cut the margin to 15-13. Saint Leo added three runs in the fifth to extend its lead to 18-13, taking advantage of three straight walks issued by Tar pitchers to open the frame.
A two-run home run by Rollins' Chris Hendricks in the seventh and Nick Breen's solo blast in the eight pulled the Tars to within two of the Lions, 18-16. Rollins tied the game at 18-18 in the top of the ninth on three hits, but could not prevent Saint Leo's game winner in the bottom of the frame.
Troy Sieber went 4-for-6 at the plate with three runs scored and four runs batted in, while Stancil finished 2-for-4 with four runs and four RBI. Jordan Pendleton picked up the win in relief, improving to 6-2. Rollins reliever Brooks Norton was tagged with the loss, despite striking out five Saint Leo batters while allowing just one run and three hits over four-and-two-thirds innings.
In the final game of the series, Saint Leo posted a single run in the first inning and enjoyed a three-run outburst in the second on four hits, a walk, and a Rollins error to take a 4-0 lead after two.
Mata belted a double down the left field line to put runners in scoring position with none out to start the Saint Leo half of the second. Shane Williams plated the first Lion run on a routine grounder to short that was misplayed by the Tars' shortstop, and Nunez drove in another run on a single to left field that put Saint Leo up 3-0. Two batters later, Turner drew a bases loaded walk to score Nunez with what proved to be the game-winning run.
The Lions added a final run in the fourth, when Nunez reached on a lead-off triple and crossed on Stancil's base hit to right field.
Rollins spoiled Saint Leo's shutout bid in the ninth with three runs, two of them coming off Christopher Corbett's two-out home run to left field.
Saint Leo starter Shane Haight pitched the complete game win in game two, fanning seven batted against one walk. He allowed three runs on five hits, and improved to 3-0 on the season.
Nunez finished game two with a 4-for-4 ledger at the plate, with Mata and Gibree collecting two hits. For Rollins, Purcell had two hits to pace the Tars at the plate.
Saint Leo returns to the diamond on Tuesday, March 22, at 6:00 p.m. when it hosts Webber International at 6:00 p.m. in a non-conference matchup.
