Women's lacrosse blanks Shorter, 18-0

Box Score

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo women's lacrosse controlled play from start to finish against an overmatched Shorter University side, and posted an 18-0 shutout win over the Hawks on Sunday afternoon at University Turf Stadium.

The Saint Leo win was the first shutout victory in program history. The closest the Lions had previously come to holding an opponent scoreless was a 17-1 win over Newberry during the program's inaugural 2012 season.

Senior Joanna Chadwick notched three goals in the win, which boosted the Lions' record to 8-6 overall. All three of Chadwick's goals came in the first half, and helped give Saint Leo a 10-0 lead at the intermission.

Junior Allie Sheftall, sophomores Caroline Fraser and Kelsey Burns, and freshman Abbie Ross each had two goals for the Lions. Juniors Kelly Smigiera and Lauren Irish, sophomore Emily Pittenger, and newcomers Katie Larson, Alex Alvarez, and Amanda Coppolo all recorded one goal apiece.

Senior goalie Brittany Millsap also entered the game in the second half at the attack position and scored a goal for the Lions.

Saint Leo outshot Shorter, 36-4, and had 24 ground balls to the Hawks' 11. Defensively, the Lions held Shorter to just 12 successful clears out of 21 attempts.

Reserve goalie Kaylyn Kearns recorded the only save on the Saint Leo goal over her 45 minutes of play; Millsap started the game between the pipes and did not record a save. Shorter goalies Nicole Kube and Catherine Mitchner combined to make eight stops.

Saint Leo returns to action on Saturday, April 18, when it travels to St. Charles, Mo., to face third-ranked Lindenwood University. Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m. (CT).
