Lions outlast Lynn in five-set showdown

BOCA RATON, Fla. – It was the second-straight five-set match for the Saint Leo women's volleyball team, but this time, the Lions were on the winning end, topping host Lynn, 3-2, in the marathon match in Boca Raton on Friday evening.

How It Happened
Set 1| The host school went off offensively in the opening set, putting down 17 kills, on a clip of .375. The Lions trailed from a 4-4 tie, despite an impressive seven kills from Anna Siruckova. Saint Leo was able to bring the match to 19-20 score, but they were unable to close the gap. Lynn took the first set, 25-22.

Set 2| Lynn put down more kills than the Lions in the second, tallying 17 for the second-straight set, while the Lions put down just 13. However, the difference maker was the Lions only committing two hitting errors, while the Fighting Knights had ten attacks go awry. Again, the two squads went back and forth, meeting each other at 11 different points, for 11 ties throughout the set. A Jillian Stolzenburg kill gave the Lions a 26-25 lead, and an unforced Lynn error gave Saint Leo the set, 27-25. The match was tied 1-1 heading into the intermission.

Set 3| Another efficient hitting performance from the Lions helped the dominate the Fighting Knights in the third set. The Lions hit a clip of .364, only committing two errors. On the other side of the net, Lynn only managed eight kills, and recorded five errors. Saint Leo topped Lynn in the third set, 25-13, to take a 2-1 lead.

Set 4| The error bug bit the Lions in the fourth set, as Saint Leo put down 11 kills, but committed eight errors in the process. Lynn countered with 13 kills and just four errors. The Fighting Knights took the lead at 6-5, and never looked back as four points was the closest the Lions could get to the lead. Lynn took the game, 25-18, and evened the set at 2-2, forcing the fifth and deciding set.

Set 5| Saint Leo scored nine of their fifteen point on kills in the shortened fifth set. The Lions took the 8-7 advantage to switch sides, and three Hope Lemon kills gave the Lions a lead that was never relinquished. Saint Leo took the set 15-13, and the match, 3-2.

Beyond the Box

  • Siruckova put down 23 kills, which tied her career-high. She also put down 23 kills at Barry on Sept. 25. This was her 12th double digit kill game this season, and her fourth in a row. 
  • Senior setter Ashlee Hodgskin dished out 50 assists against Lynn. This was the fifth time she reached the 50-assist mark this season, and second match in a row.
  • Stolzenburg only committed one error on the evening on 26 attempts. She put down 14 kills for a clip of .500. This was Stolzenburg's fourth .500+ hitting game of the season, three of which came on double-digit kill matches.

For the Fighting Knights

  • Lynn received a majority of its offense from Claire Angelich and Lydia West. West put down 20 kills on a clip of .500, Angelich put down 18, on .464 hitting percentage.
  • Marissa Tandron dished out 53 assists and scooped up 18 digs.

  • In the last match up, Saint Leo dominate Nova Southeastern at home to a quick 3-0 win. A total of 41 kills on a clip of .384 defined the offensive output for the Lions on the evening.
  • Britt Sederholm led the way with 10 kills, while Anna Siruckova and Hope Lemon each had eight.
  • Eight services aces for the Lions kept the visiting Sharks out of system, allowing no NSU player to record more than five kills all evening.
  • NSU is led by Dana Holger at 3.58 kills per set, Denvyer Tyler-Palmer follows with 2.87 kills per set.
