WINTER PARK, Fla. – The struggles for the Saint Leo women’s soccer team continued on Sunday afternoon as the Lions surrendered four goals in just 13 minutes during the second half when Lenior-Rhyne University rebounded from a 3-1 deficit to steal a 5-4 victory away from Saint Leo at Cahall-Sandspur Field on the campus of Rollins College.
The first half saw the Lions rebound from an early Lenoir-Rhyne goal to score three-straight. The first came in the 32nd minute when junior Malloree Enoch, back into the Saint Leo (3-4) lineup, sent a cross into the box where it was touched into the goal by junior Pia Soesemann.
The Lions were back at it just six minutes later when junior Cassie Barbaresi took a ball into the box and slipped it to sophomore Karin Hedlund, whose blast zipped past the Bears’ goalkeeper and gave Saint Leo a 2-1 advantage.
The Lions took it to 3-1 when Soesemann again connected with Enoch just before halftime as Saint Leo took the hot hand into the locker rooms.
The second half was a different story as Lenoir-Rhyne (6-1) came out of the lockers and wasted little time drawing even.
The Bears scored goals in the 49th, 54th, 58th, and 62nd minutes at the beginning of the second stanza that left Saint Leo stunned. Trying to recover, senior Chrissy Darwell redirected a Kristen Preseault pass into the back of the net in the 72nd minute, but Saint Leo could not get the equalizer as time expired.
After starting 3-0, the Lions have now dropped four-straight and will try to rebound when they host Barry in Sunshine State Conference action on Saturday night. The Lions and Buccaneers will kick off at 7:00 p.m. at University Field.
