SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women’s soccer team got two goals each from senior Chrissy Darwell and junior Pia Soesemann as the Lions upended Eckerd College 5-0 in Sunshine State Conference action from University Field on Wednesday evening.
Soesemann started the scoring for the Lions in the 36th minute on a goal that barely crossed the line, catching the Tritons wrong-footed off the original shot from Karin Hedlund that deflected off the post. The shot careened back to Soeseman and she rolled it across the goal line for the tally.
Soesemann’s score proved to be the only tally registered by either team in the opening stanza, but Saint Leo (6-6-1, 2-3-1 SSC) would open the floodgates in the second half.
The Lions would launch a barrage of shots toward the Eckerd (2-12, 0-7 SSC) goalkeeper as they saw an 18 minute span where all four goals would hit the scoreboard.
First it was Soesemann again in the 50th, then Darwell twice in the 52nd and 67th and Cassie Barbaresi snuck a goal in between Darwell’s duo in the 65th minute. All were decisive goals that were spot-on blasts into the back of the net.
The Lions launched 41 total shots toward the Eckerd goal and 20 of those were on-target as EC ‘keeper Kelly Zahorski posted 13 saves.
Starting Kelcee Mai in goal, Saint Leo kept a clean sheet for the fourth time in 2010 as she posted two saves on Eckerd’s seven shots. She improved her overall record to 3-0 for the season.
The Lions remain home as they face their next opponent in Northwood University (Fla.) on Sunday afternoon. Kick-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at University Field on the Saint Leo campus.
