SAINT LEO, Fla. – Staying in good game-form for the upcoming season, senior Bruce Cutler is having a noteworthy year for the Albany BWP Highlanders of the United Soccer League, even to the point where he was named to the USL’s Team of the Week in June.
Cutler’s name was etched in the weekly tablet as he scored the game-winner in the Highlander’s victory over Northeast Division rivals the Vermont Voltage. From all accounts, his goal was of spectacular fashion, described as “a waist high volley from 25 yards out” by fans in attendance.
Ironically enough, Cutler’s goal sent his team to the win over a squad which features an SLU teammate of his in Jonathan Glenn, who is having a successful season for Vermont.
Coming off a stellar junior season as one of the Lions’ leaders, Cutler continues to be noticed as one of the top student-athletes in the country, accumulating a 3.98 grade-point-average. He has totaled four post-season awards, including three academic honors. Those accolades consist of CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District First Team member, NSCAA Scholar All-South Region, as well as an NSCAA All-South Region Second Team nod.
To go along with his outstanding effort in the classroom, the mathematics major finished the year as the second leading scorer for the Lions with a career-high 14 points, including a career-best five goals. In addition to playing in 14 of the Lions’ 15 contests, the Inverurie, Scotland native totaled one game-winning tally and was a perfect 3-for-3 from the penalty kick area; keeping his lifetime penalty kick conversion percentage at a perfect 1.000 (9-for-9).
