SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo athletic community is excited as men's and women's cross country returns as varsity sports in fall 2024, competing in NCAA Division II and the Sunshine Conference during the 2024-2025 academic year.
"Saint Leo University is always evaluating the quality of its athletic program offerings," said Marcal Lazenby, director of Athletics, Wellness & Recreation. "As more students express interest in athletic competition, it made sense to bring back this successful program and engage with talented student-athletes who have a passion for cross country."
Cross country has a rich history at Saint Leo University. The men's team won SSC conference championships in 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2019, while the women's team won in 2014, 2016, and 2021. Both teams have a combined 13 appearances in NCAA championships, showcasing the talent and dedication that define our programs.
Anthony Deleva, a former cross-country athlete and alumnus, is leading the comeback. "Anthony's deep connection to the program and experience as an athlete make him an ideal choice to lead the charge," said Lazenby. "Anthony's vision emphasizes excellence, hard work, and a supportive team environment, promising to inspire both current athletes and recruits."
With fall 2024 approaching, preparations are in full swing. Recruitment efforts aim to attract top talent from within the university and at high schools, where student-athletes may be seeking a collegiate program. Under Anthony Deleva's leadership, there's renewed energy and excitement.
"The return of cross country symbolizes resilience and community spirit," said Lazenby. "As the teams gear up for competition, there's a sense of anticipation and optimism within our athletic community."
