Bevill Named SSC Women's Golf Coach of the Year, Verticchio and Cote Earn Third Team Honors

May 01, 2024

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The 2024 Sunshine State Conference champion #15 Saint Leo University women's golf team saw three Lions earn SSC postseason honors. Head Coach Lyndsey Bevill was honored by her conference peers as the Coach of the Year, student-athletes Elena Verticchio and SSC champion Maya Cote were named to the third team.

This marked the first time since 2022 that a Lion earned All-SSC honors and the first-time multiple Lions were named to the teams since 2017. Marie Coors was named the Golfer of the Year and named to the first team, and Amanda Jakobsson earned second team honors.

Elena Verticchio earns her first All-SSC honors in her senior year after posting five top-15 finishes including a first-place finish at the 2024 SMSU Classic leading the Lions to a team title. She is currently ranked #26 in the region by SCOREBOARD powered by Clippd with a team-best 73.7 scoring average.

Maya Cote is named to her first All-SSC team in her junior season after carding a -1 at the 2024 SSC Championship to take home the individual title by three strokes. Prior to the SSC title, she finished in fourth place at the SMSU Classic guiding Saint Leo to a team title. She finished in a tie for 19th at the Babs Steffens invitational as the Lions were one of three non-Division I schools in a nine-team field. Cote's 73.7 scoring average was good for second on the team.

Head Coach Lyndsey Bevill is honored as SSC Coach of the Year by her peers. Bevill steered the No. 14 Lions to the program's first SSC Championship title. Saint Leo also finished third or better four times, including a win at the SMSU Classic. The Lions own an 85-33-3 record in Division II across 31 rounds played, and four SLU golfers rank Top-75 in the Scoreboard standings. Bevill is the first Saint Leo women's golf coach to earn SSC Coach of the Year.

The Lions are set to take on the NCAA Division II South Regional next week with the first round beginning on May 6 at the Cleveland Country Club in Cleveland, Tenn. The three-day three-round tournament is hosted by Lee University.
