SSC PREVIEW: #13 Men's Golf Opens Postseason Play at SSC Championships in South Florida

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The 12th-ranked Saint Leo University men's golf team is set to begin postseason play on Sunday at the 2024 Sunshine State Conference men's golf championship. The three-day tournament is being hosted by Lynn University and will take place at The Osprey Point Golf Course in Boca Raton, Fla.

The 2024 SSC championship field features three teams ranked in the top-15, #11 Nova Southeastern, #12 Saint Leo, and #13 Florida Southern. Rounding out the field ranked in the top 50 is #25 Tampa, #29 Barry, and #42 Lynn. 

Saint Leo enters postseason play following a second-place finish at the Battle at The Shores. Earlier in the season the Lions took home the team title at the Saint Leo Invitational and Griffin Invitational. In addition to the Battle at The Shores second place finish, the Lions took second place at both the Shark Invitational and the National Preview, both hosted by Nova Southeastern. The Lions also had a top-five finish at the Matlock Collegiate Classic to open the spring season.

Individually two Lions took home the individual titles this season. Most recently, Alex Heck led the 93-player field at the Battle at The Shores for his first collegiate win and Jake Nash was the leading golfer at the Griffin Invitational for his second individual title in three years.

Saint Leo will look to earn its first SSC championship title in program history. The Lions placed second in 2023 finishing 19 strokes behind SSC champion Barry. In 2017, Saint Leo finished in second place just six strokes behind SSC champion Barry. And in 2016, when the Lions went on to win the NCAA championship, they were 12 strokes off the lead finishing second to SSC champion Lynn. In head coach Chris Greenwood's first year as the leader of the Lions, his team took second place also behind SSC champion Barry. Individually, since 2014 four Lions have finished in the top five. Most recently, Francois Cilliers finished in a tie for third place a season ago.

The top-10 teams in the South regional rankings will be selected for the South Region Tournament with the team and tournament champions representing the SSC. The 2024 NCAA Division II Super Regional will take place Thursday, May 9th - Saturday, May 11th at Chattahoochee Golf Club in Gainesville, Georgia. The NCAA championship will take place Tuesday, May 21st - Saturday, May 25th at Orange County National Golf Center and Lodge in Winter Garden, Florida as part of the Division II Spring Championship Festival. This year's festival is hosted by Rollins and the Greater Orlando Sports Commission. The NCAA will announce all championship competitors on Friday, April 26th.
