BOCA RATON, Fla. – Saint Leo University women's soccer team closed out the 2024 regular season in Boca Raton on Friday afternoon. The Lions and the Fighting Knights met for the second time in nearly two weeks and finished with the same result. The Lions jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second half before Lynn found the back of the net twice to walk away with a 2-2 draw. The Lions ends the regular season with an 8-4-5 overall record.
Amit Beilin made the start in goal for the Lions and made a save in the draw. Saint Leo's attack was led by its two goal scorers,
Katja May and
Julia Gonsman.
Maeva Dion was the lone Lion to register more than one shot in the game. Seven of the Lions shots were on target.
Rhyanne Pascoe had the assist on Gonsman's goal.
SAINT LEO 2, LYNN 2
- The Fighting Knights tested the Lions defense early by registering a shot in the third minute that went off target.
- Aikaterini Papageorgiou forced the Lynn keeper to make a save in the 12th minute as she sent a ball to the top center of the goal.
- Elise McDonald attempted to open the scoring with a ball to the top right of the goal that found the Lynn keeper for the save.
- Saint Leo's leading scorer in 2023 got the Lions on the board in the 33rd minute with a shot to the top middle of the goal that found the back of the net to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.
- The Lions took a 1-0 advantage into the halftime break.
- Saint Leo's Julia Gonsman registered the first shot of the second half in the 61st minute and connected to make it a 2-0 Saint Leo lead. The graduate student from California took a feed from Rhyanne Pascoe and slotted it past the Lynn keeper.
- Lynn responded quickly with its first score in the 69th minute on a shot to the bottom left of the goal.
- The Lions went back to work immediately with four shots over a 65 second span. Franziska Theus registered a blocked shot followed with an off target shot by freshman Ruari Dever. After a pair of Lynn subs the Lions went back to work peppering the home teams keeper. Morgan Gamin saw her shot blocked and Tiana Maniella's shot was saved.
- In the final minute of play the Fighting Knights capitalized on a free kick opportunity and found the equalizer.
- Payton Gibney registered a last chance effort shot attempting to steal a win but her shot was put on target and saved by the home team's keeper.
UP NEXT
Saint Leo has clinched the number four seed in next weeks Sunshine State Conference tournament. As a top-four seed the Lions will host and are set to host the number five seed Embry-Riddle Eagles as will be announced by the conference office this weekend. The Lions are set for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Monday night at the Saint Leo Soccer Field.
