TAMPA, Fla. – Saint Leo University women's soccer team walked away from the University of Tampa's Pepin Stadium on Saturday evening with a 1-1 draw. The Lions picked up another point in the Sunshine State Conference standings as their record now sits as 7-4-4 overall and 3-3-3 in SSC action. Late in the second half,
Ella Owen connected with the back of the net for her team-leading seventh goal in 2024.
Goetzer made four saves on the night and conceded just her third goal in the last six games. The Lions recorded eight shots on the night with Owen leading the team with three while
Elise McDonald and
Morgan Gamin had a pair each.
Carmen Reinerink also had a shot in the draw.
SAINT LEO 1, TAMPA 1
- The Spartans came out strong from the opening kick registering the first shot of the game just 44 seconds after the opening whistle.
- Goetzer made her first save of the night in the seventh minute as Tampa pressured the Lions keeper with back-to-back shots.
- McDonald had the first look of the night for Saint Leo as she fired a shot that went high over the goal in the 10th minute.
- Saint Leo struck first in the 35th minute as the Lions capitalized on a set piece that Julia Gonsman fed to McDonald who in turn connected with the crashing Owen for the score.
- As time expired in the opening 45 minutes, Goetzer made a critical save to keep the home team off the board as Saint Leo took a 1-0 advantage into the halftime break.
- The Spartans connected for their lone goal of the game as the attack crashed the goal and bested the Lions keeper to find the back of the net in the 56th minute.
- Morgan Gamin quickly attempted to put the Lions back on top as she had her second shot of the game and first of the second half.
- The defenses stepped up big over the final 20 minutes as only Saint Leo was able to register any shots.
- Owen's attempt at her second goal was twarted by the Tampa keeper in the 82nd minute and McDonald put a ball on target in the 85th minute but was also kept out of the goal by the Spartans keeper.

Saint Leo's regular season is wrapping up with just two more games remaining. First is a the final SSC game of the regular season as Saint Leo heads to Eckerd on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. kick off against the Tritons. The regular season finale is set for November 8 in Boca Raton as the Lions take on Lynn in non-conference action.
