Women's Soccer Season Ends in SSC Semifinals

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The fourth-seed Saint Leo University women's soccer team closed out its 2024 season in the semifinal round of the 2024 Sunshine State Conference tournament. The Lions fell 2-1 to the top-seed #12 Florida Tech in Melbourne on Thursday evening. The Lions struggled to get an attack organized until the final 15 minutes of the game. Saint Leo's lone goal came in the 77th minute on a strike from Arielle Jacus. The Lions end the season with a 9-5-5 overall record.   

Saint Leo's two shots on the night came off the feet of Jacus and Haggstrom. Hannah Goetzer made the start and had three saves before exiting with an injury just 20 minutes into the first half. Amit Beilin played 70 minutes and made 10 saves in relief.     

Following Florida Tech's conference title win in PK's over Nova Southeastern, Katja May was named to the 2024 Sunshine State Conference All-Tournament team.

  • Florida Techs attack came out strong getting a pair of corner kicks in the opening two minutes.
  • After a blocked shot, Tech took the rebound and pushed it past Goetzer for the first score of the game.
  • Saint Leo struggled to get any form of offense assembled in the opening half as it registered just a pair of corner kicks in the half.
  • Following a keeper change for the visitors. The Panthers crashed the box and slipped a ball just inside the post for a 2-0 advantage.
  • Mina Haggström had the lions first scoring chance in the 72nd minute as the attack crashed the box and her shot hit the diving goalkeeper for the stop.
  • Saint Leo's second shot of the game came in the 77th minute. Arielle Jacus made it count as she took a feed from Ella Owen and she took a deflection off the center back and hit the post for the score.
