SAINT LEO, Fla – The Saint Leo Women's Soccer team fought a back-and-forth battle that ended in a draw versus the University of Tampa Spartans.
Â
The Lions asserted themselves defensively almost immediately off of kickoff when Tampa was not able to find any luck against the Green & Gold wall.
Â
The Lions maintained strong spells of possession while not allowing the Spartans to pounce on any counter-attacking opportunities.
Â
Any lob passes throughout the game were quickly dealt with by the strong back line of
Bella Arato,
Elise McDonald, Mina Haggstrom,
Alva Nabb, and
Jill Sutherland.
Â
The Lions did a majority of their great work in the second half as they outshot the Spartans seven to four in the last 45 minutes.
Â
Coach O'Connor's side were especially disciplined across the midfield line making sure that once one player stepped up field another would drop back into a defensive six position.
Â
The Lions did come close to scoring a couple times due to some crosses coming off of multiple free kicks just inside the Spartans' half.
Â
The Lions and Spartans ended their 90-minute battle in a draw.
Â
The Lions are next in action on September 23rd as they travel to Melbourne, FL to take on the Panthers of Florida Tech.
