Saint Leo Takes 2022-23 SSC Men’s Mayors’ Cup

May 23, 2023

MELBOURNE, Fla. – For the fourth time since 2015-16, The Saint Leo men's athletic programs have brought home the 2022-23 Sunshine State Conference Mayor's Cup for the men's division. The Saint Leo women came in sixth, just a half point behind Embry-Riddle.

"As an athletic department we are extremely proud to claim the Men's Cup for 2022-2023" said University Vice President/ Director of Athletics Francis X. Reidy. "Despite some challenges on campus this spring, our coaches and student-athletes remain committed and focused. We take great pride in having a well-balanced, competitive athletic program and this accomplishment is a testament to that philosophy."

Mayors' Cup scoring is based on the regular-season finish for sports with conference standings and championship finish for cross country, golf, rowing, and swimming. For sports where all schools compete, scoring begins with 11 points awarded for finishing first to one point for eleventh. In sports where fewer than 11 teams compete, first-place points will be awarded based on the number of competing teams. Scoring will take into account ties in the SSC standings. Ties broken with a head-to-head tiebreaker will see Mayors' Cup points distributed accordingly. Points will be split when head-to-head results cannot break a tie.

The Lions sat in fifth place after the fall and winter sports were tallied, with 20 points, 10 of which came from a second-place finish in the conference during basketball season. SLU scored six points after a second-place cross-country finish and two points each in soccer and swimming.

The Lions dominated the field in the spring with 31 points. SLU scored eight points for winning the tennis regular season title, nine points after finishing second at the golf championship, and nine points for finishing third place in baseball. SLU capped off the spring with a fourth-place finish in lacrosse which netted them five points.

Saint Leo amassed 51 points across eight conference sports to win the men's award outright and beat the field by six points. Along with the outright title in 2015-16, the Lions also won outright in 2013-14 and shared the cup with Florida Southern in 2012-13.
