SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's soccer program along with their alumnae will be hosting a Leukemia Awareness Night in honor of Saint Leo alumna Jasmine Johnson who fought to bring awareness to the cause throughout her lifetime. The event is scheduled to take place during the women's soccer team's contest with Eckerd, Wednesday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. The team is partnering with Be The Match® and will have a booth set-up for those in attendance to get swabbed to test to see if they are a match for a potential bone marrow transplant recipient.
Johnson, who was a two-time All-South Region selection for the Lions, battled Leukemia starting in 2009 until her untimely passing this past May at the age of 35. She was named All-Sunshine State Conference Second Team in 2010 as a junior while also earning Second Team All-South Region accolades from both Daktronics and NSCAA. She followed that up with an NSCAA All-South Region Second Team honor as a senior in 2011. Overall she competed in 38 career games for the Lions while scoring five goals and dishing out 10 assists while holding down the defensive line. She helped lead the Lions in 2011 to their first Sunshine State Conference Regular Season Championship.
This cause was near and dear to Jasmine, and the alumnae and team wanted to bring back Leukemia Awareness Night in her honor.
Along with the Be The Match® booth, which will have both information on the organization as well as the swabbing station, a former coach who spent time mentoring Jasmine will speak during halftime as well as a leukemia survivor who will speak to the importance of the bone marrow transplant program and getting tested to see if you are a match.
