Lions Ledger: Fall Action Continues Across Lion Athletics

  • RECORDS: Saint Leo 4-6, 0-2 SSC | Eckerd 7-3, 0-2 SSC | Nova Southeastern 9-0, 2-0 SSC
  • Saint Leo went 0-2 this past week at home versus Florida Southern (3-1) and No. 9 Tampa (3-0). The Lions won the opening set Friday versus the Mocs but then dropped six-straight sets to close out the weekend against a pair of strong opponents.
  • Senior Brooke Turner continues to lead the team in kills per set at 2.65 followed by senior Ashley Quero and junior Elizabeth Sandoval who are each averaging over 2.00 kps. Quero and senior Payton Bellano are sharing the team lead with 10 service aces each through the opening 10 matches.
  • Bellano also leads the team in digs per set at 3.80 while sophomore Margaret Schirm's 22 total blocks pace the squad at the net. Sophomore Madelyn Eden (15.0) and Turner (14.0) also have double-digit blocks.
  • Eckerd opened the season 6-1 with its lone loss coming at the hands of top-10 ranked Lewis University at the Flagler Saints Invitational. The Tritons also competed at the VSU Volleyball Classis and has faced six of the same opponents the Lions have faced. The Tritons are 5-2 against Valdosta State (2-0), UNC Pembroke (1-0), Arkansas Fort Smith (1-0), Albany State (1-0), Tampa (0-1) and Florida Southern (0-1). The Lions lost their match with Arkansas Fort Smith 3-1 which the Tritons won 3-1. Eckerd also went five sets with Tampa which the Lions fell 3-0.
  • Freshman Ranya Mehta leads the Triton attack with 2.89 kills per set. She is flanked by juniors Joelle Coulter (2.74) and Rachel Wisian (2.29) on the front line. Freshman libero Daniella Russo-Lolas leads the team in digs per set at 3.65 but is followed closely by Coulter who is averaging 3.49 per set. The Tritons have put down 81 blocks over their 10 matches and have five individuals with double-digit blocks led by Wisian and sophomore Anna Jungjohann who each have 36.
  • HISTORY: Saint Leo has won eight of the last 10 meetings between the two programs. The Tritons last victory in the series, Oct. 1, 2019 in Saint Leo, snapped a five-match win streak in the series by the Lions.
  • Nova Southeastern is off to a perfect start to the 2021 season. After winning their opener 3-1 over Pittsburg State, the Sharks rattled off seven-straight 3-0 victories before going five versus Palm Beach Atlantic this past weekend. The 9-0 mark is the best start in program history for the Sharks. Eight of their nine matches have come at home this season.
  • Freshman Elizabeth Price has been explosive on offense for the Sharks as she is averaging 4.11 kills per set to rank second in the Sunshine State Conference and 17th overall in NCAA Division II. The Sharks are also averaging a league best 2.50 service aces per set to rank fifth in the nation while sophomore Madison Cook ranks second in the conference with .56 aces per set, 15 total. The Sharks also rank fourth nationally in hitting percentage (.316) and sixth in kills per set (14.47).
  • HISTORY: Saint Leo leads the all-time series with Nova Southeastern, 30-22, and has won seven of the last 10 matches versus the Sharks. The Sharks snapped a four-match win streak by the Lions in the series in 2018. Saint Leo and Nova Southeastern split the series meetings in 2019, each winning at home.

  • Saint Leo wis on the hunt for its first win of 2021. The Green and Gold suffered a 3-0 loss at Rollins on Wednesday and lost an overtime heartbreaker to Embry-Riddle on Saturday.
  • Mauro Diaz and Josef Hefele have each found the back of the net. Jackson Eckley and Riccardo and Riccardo Zarri have shared the goalkeeper responsibilities. Riccardo has earned four starts in which he has faced 50 shots. The Italian has earned 14 saves, a 0.636 save percentage and a 1.89 goals allowed average. Meanwhile Eckley has earned a pair of starts in which he posted five saves, seeing 25 shots for a .500 save percentage and a 2.25 goals allowed average.
  • Trinity College won by forfeit in its season opener against Johnson University. Since then, the Tigers have dropped a 3-0 decision to Southeastern and a 7-0 decision to Webber International. Trinity College also fought into extra time to draw with Talladegea College, 0-0, and St. Sebastian Elite College, 1-1.
  • HISTORY: Wednesday marks the first meeting between the programs.
  • Palm Beach Atlantic won its SSC opener hosting the Florida Southern Moccasins Saturday night. Before hosting Saint Leo, the Sailfish are set to host the Fort Lauderdale Eagles in the program's final non-conference tilt.
  • Quenzi Huerman paces the Blue and White offense with three goals and a pair of assists for eight points. He is followed closely by Fred Ferreira with three goals and an assist. In goal, Albert Escuin has earned three starts for a 3-0 record. Ferreira has faced 23 shots in which he earned nine saves converting to a 0.818 save percentage and a 0.67 goals allowed average. Teammate Guillermo Falo earned the start against Florida Southern. Falo faced 13 shots earning three stops against the Mocs.
  • HISTORY: The programs last met on Sat. Sept. 28 in which the Lions upset No. 14 PBA, 2-1. Mauro Diaz tallied the first goal of the night in the 7th minute of action. Saint Leo alumni, Elias Niesigk registered the eventual game winner in the 36th minute following the Sailfish goal five minutes earlier.

  • Saint Leo is looking to rebound from a tight loss at Embry-Riddle Sunday night in Daytona Beach, Florida. Paula Martinez Miranda, Bella Arato, and Lyssa Abernot have each found the back of the net for the Green and Gold.
  • Maitane Bravo has been tremendous in the net. The redshirt senior goalkeeper has recorded 24 saves while facing 46 shots, compiling an impressive 0.828 save percentage. She enters the week with 1.25 goals allowed average.
  • No. 11 Columbus State is coming off a big week defeating UNC Pembroke, 4-0, and Georgia College, 3-1.
  • Morgan Parker and Rachael Sweigard have each netted three goals apiece to pace the Cougar's offense. In goal, Sara Halilhodzic and Lizzie Hedrick have split time. Halilhodzic has earned all six starts with 10 saves and a 2-0-1 record. She enters the week with a 0.833 save percentage, allowing 0.62 goals per game.

  • Palm Beach Atlantic rolled over Florida Memorial 7-0 and then won their conference opener at Florida Southern, 2-0, on Saturday. Sydney Timmes leads the Sailfish offense with three goals and an assist.
  • Rachel Neumann has earned four starts in the net for PBA. She holds a 4-0 mark earning 14 saves facing 30 shots. She enters the week with a 0.933 save percentage and a 0.28 goals allowed average.
  • HISTORY: Last meeting on Saturday, Sept. 28, Saint Leo topped PBA 302 in West Palm Beach. Kennedy Messina opened scoring for the Green and Gold in the match in the 51st minute.
